AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR ENLARGED PROSTATE GLAND

Enlarged Prostate Gland treatment in Ayurveda

Prostate gland is a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in male mammals and releasing prostatic fluid. The technical or literal meaning of prostate is “Protector” or the one who stands before like a guard. Basically it’s a guard to the pipe which carries urine from urinary bladder to outside. This protects the urethra in men because the urinary pipe in men is much longer than in females and needs protection. It not only guards the urethra but also guards the sperms by its secretions. The secretions are highly alkaline and protect the sperms from acidic media in the vagina, thereby helping the sperm to lead a longer life span.

Size and Location of Prostate Gland

A healthy male’s prostate gland is about 11 grams in weight, which is a little bigger than the size of a walnut.
The part of urethra which is surrounded by prostate gland is called Prostatic urethra. If the prostate gland grows bigger in size, it presses down on this portion of urethra leading to symptoms like urinary urge, drop by drop urination, difficult and painful urination. Since the ejaculatory ducts also open in the urethra in this region, there can be pain during the ejaculation as well, if the prostate is enlarged.

Zones of Prostate Gland

Prostate is an exocrine gland, found in mammals and is divided into 4 zones i.e. Peripheral ( 70 % )  Central ( 25 % )  Transition zone ( 5 % )  and fibro-muscular zone (5 % )
In Peripheral zone, 70-80 % of prostate cancers origin in this area and Benign prostate enlargement happens mostly in Transition zone.
Sometimes the zones are also classified into lobes
Anterior Lobe is transitional zone, Posterior Lobe is Peripheral zone, Lateral lobes are all over the zones and Median lobe is roughly the central zone.

Function of Prostate Gland

As mentioned above, the meaning of Prostate is to protect like a guard. The secretions from the gland are slightly alkaline and help the spermatozoa to live for longer span and stay motile in the highly acidic vaginal secretions. The sperms which are expelled along with prostatic secretions have better motility, longer survival and better protection of the genetic material.

What are PSA levels and other ways to find Enlarged prostate or Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is one of the significant causes of death in elderly men and is one of the most common cancers. The increased PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) in blood, enlarged prostate by rectal exam and measurement of a protein in urine called – Engrailed-2 or EN2 can lead to diagnosis of enlarged prostate and Prostate cancer.
As mentioned above, the prostate cancer mainly begins in the Peripheral zone of the prostate and Benign prostatic hypertrophy occurs mainly in the transitional zone.
The PSA levels help to establish if the prostatic enlargement is benign or cancerous. There are however Ayurvedic remedies and natural treatment options which help to reduce the PSA levels and keep them in control to normal limits.
