ABSTRACT
Kallmann syndrome is a condition which occurs due to lack of sex hormones in the body. In this condition there is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Patients of kallmann syndrome experience delayed puberty and a peculiar feature Anosmia(lack of sense of smell). This is a congenital condition that affects 1 out of 30,000 males and 1 out of 120,000 females. Apart from a sense of smell, kallmann syndrome can also affect the mouth, eyes, ears, heart, kidney. Researches have shown that gene mutations in kallmann syndromes are associated with the olfactory region of the brain. That's why patients have issues with smell.
INTRODUCTION
During development of the body , the hypothalamus releases hormones GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) which stimulates the pituitary to produce hormones which are responsible for the development of gonads (testicles in males and ovaries in females). But in this case of Kallmann syndrome due to genetic defects there is low production of GnRH which leads to under development of sexual organs (gonads). Due to which there is delay or absence of puberty. In this syndrome the patient will suffer from anosmia (no smell) or hyposmia (decreased smell). This condition is due to the weak neurons that signal the hypothalamus. No treatment of this condition will lead to no puberty. Due to the reduced stimulation to the pituitary there is reduced production of LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). Decrease in level of these hormones hampers the development and function of reproductive organs.
CAUSES
This is a genetic disorder hence there will be genetic mutations in specific areas of chromosomes and is inherited from parents to childrens.
