What Is The Concept Of Agni (Digestive Fire) In Ayurveda

Abstract

According to Ayurvedic science, every substance is made from the five elements in this universe. These five basic elements are aakash (Space), vayu (Air), jala (Water), agni (Fire) and prithvi (Earth). These five basic elements along with atma (Soul), the life element, help in our physical formation. The human body is formed from these elements. The five element combinations lead to form tridosha that is vata, pitta and kapha.

  1. Air+Space = Vata
  2. Fire+Water = Pitta
  3. Earth+Water = Kapha

Let's discuss it in detail!

Agni, Concept Of Agni, Digestive Fire, Digestive Enzymes, Unicorn of Ayurveda, Function Of Digestive Fire, Types Of Agni, Properties Of Agni, Herbal Remedies, Symptoms, Treatment, Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Treatment, Diagnosis

Introduction

The word agni means fire. In Ayurveda, we correlate the agni with digestive fire. Life-span, strength, enthusiasm, complexion, health, energy, corpulence, immunity, breathing, temperature, lutre, and important physiological activity, all the functions are held by an agni (Body fire). If body fire is finished, then the person dies. If the agni becomes normal then all the physiological functions of the body are normal. If the digestive fire gets vitiated then various diseases occur in the body. That food nourishes dhatus (tissues), ojas (Immunity), strength, vigor, complexion etc. depends on agni because rasa etc. can't be produced from undigested food. Five agni's pertaining each to prithvi, jala, vayu, tejas and akash digest the respective fractions of the food. Vitiation of agni becomes unable to digest even the light food and the food being undigested gets acidified and toxic.

Function Of Digestive Fire (Agni)

The prana vayu with receiving function carries the food to the belly where the food disintegrated by fluids (Juices) and softened by fatty substances gets acted upon by the digestive fire fanned by the samana vayu. Thus the digestive fire cooks the timely taken and balanced food properly leading to promotion of life-span. Agni cooks from below the food situated in the stomach for division into rasa (Nutritive fraction) and mala (Excretion) as the same cooks the rice grain with water kept in a vessel into boiled rice.

Properties Of Agni

Agni (digestive fire) has the characteristics of sight/vision (Roopa) and touch (Sparsh).

Types Of Agni

Jatharagni is one of the most important key roles in health and diseases. During the balanced state of jatharagni it provides strength, enthusiasm, immunity, longevity, temperature, complexion, health, lustre, proper digestion, other dhatva agni and bhuta agni and other important functions that depend on jatharagni. Diseased condition and healthy body condition both depend on agni. There are four types of digestive fire:-

  1. Samagni
  2. Visamagni
  3. Tiksnagni
  4. Mandagni

1. Samagni

Samagni state of agni is the condition in which doshas are in equilibrium state and perform normal digestion and metabolism functions.

Features Of Samagni

  • Digestion of food within stipulated period of time, if person consume normal quantity of food
  • Belching which is free from morbidities
  • Enthusiastic to do all activities
  • Proper elimination of natural urges without any difficulties
  • Feeling of lightness all over the body
  • Timely hunger and thirst

2. Visamagni

Visamagni is the state in which improper digestion and metabolism takes place due to irregular function of agni.

Features Of Visamagni

  • Sometimes agni performs normal functions
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Upward movement of air (vayu)
  • Diarrhea
  • Heaviness in abdomen
  • Straining exercise for evacuation of stools
  • Intestinal gurgling

3. Tiksnagni

Tiksnagni is the state in which hyper-functioning digestion and metabolic activities are observed.

  • Quick digestion of food even after taking more amount of food.

4. Mandagni

Mandagni is the state in which the digestion process becomes weak and takes a long time to digest the less quantity of food.

Features Of Mandagni

  • Slower digestion of food even after taking less quantity of food
  • Heaviness in abdomen
  • Heaviness in head
  • Cough
  • Dyspnea
  • Excessive salivation
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness of the body

Agni Vikriti (Destroys) Doshas

  • Visamagni state gives rise to diseases due to vata dosha.
  • Tiksnagni state gives rise to diseases due to pitta dosha.
  • Mandagni state gives rise to diseases due to kapha dosha.

Symptoms Of Vitiated Agni

  • Stasis of food
  • Headache
  • Malaise
  • Giddiness
  • Fainting
  • Stiffness in back and waist
  • Yawning
  • Bodyache
  • Thirst
  • Fever

According to the above shloka:- Irregular metabolism and digestion can lead to vitiation in dhatus. The intense metabolism and digestion and less intake of food items can cause dhatu kshaya that is dhatu depletion.

Importance Of Agni In Context To Arsa, Atisara And Grahani Dosha

The three diseases viz. Piles, diarrhea and sprue syndrome are interdependent in as much as one of them can cause the other. They get aggravated if there is reduction in the power of digestion and when the power of digestion is increased, they get cured. Therefore, agni should be specifically protected for these three ailments. Almost all diseases arise due to sluggish functions of agni.

Importance Of Agni

Jatharagni is one of the most vital agni among all agnis due to the function of dhatva agni and bhuta agni depends on jatharagni. Depletion or aggravation of jatharagni leads to depletion or aggravation of both dhatava agni and bhuta agni. That's the reason to balance the agni by taking a suitable diet and lifestyle for strength and longevity of the body. When the empty spaces (srotas) become abnormal, it brings abnormality in normal dhatu by not transferring to the required destination; this is because of the abnormality in srotas. Srotas vitiates other srotas and dhatus vitiates other dhatus for all these happenings disturbed dosas are responsible. Dosas (Vata, pitta and kapha) get imbalanced by the defective function of the agni because energy, strength, life span, nourishment and health all depend on the agni.

Relationship Between Agni And Pitta

A key concept in Ayurveda understanding of digestion is digestive fire, the process that is responsible for metabolic conversion within the body. Anything having to do with heat, light, conversion anywhere in the whole universe is under the control of the element of agni. In the body, however, agni turns over some of its functions closely related to the pitta dosha. Agni is the heating attribute of Pitta. There is always a close association between agni and pitta. Agni is the substance which originates (janya) and pitta is the source of origin (janaka). Due to this difference between the janaka and the janya the aggravated pitta might even reduce the agni. It is only by association with vata, pitta becomes powerful.

Conclusion

In this article we read that agni (digestive fire) transforms food into an energy form that manages all the important functions of the body. Agni play a vital role in human physiology by covers a multitude of functions in the body. Body fire is responsible for complexion, life-span, immunity, strength, health, energy, heat processes and corpulence. In fact, agni is responsible for life itself. Agni is the cause of various diseases, if agni is not functioning properly. Agni is very important to live a healthy life. In case of any query kindly visit www.PlanetAyurveda.com

The female reproductive system consists of Internal and external organs which create hormones and are further responsible for ovulation, menstruation and sexual activities. External genitalia protects the internal organs which allows the entry of sperm into the vagina. Menarche is the female’s first menstrual cycle and the normal menstrual cycle is divided into follicular and luteal phases and is more variable in its time course. In this article, we are going to discuss the causes and symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease with its Ayurvedic aspect in detail.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

INTRODUCTION

Untreated Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs) leads to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which is a serious condition caused by Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Sometimes it leads to serious complications, as the bacteria first enter the vagina and cause infection, with the passage of time it moves to pelvic organs. It can be a life-threatening complication when it gets spread to the bloodstream. There is Pain in the lower abdomen and there is unusual discharge from the vagina. About 770,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with Pelvic Inflammatory disease each year. The complications which include Short-term complications are- Tubo-ovarian and pelvic abscess, whereas Long term Complications include Ectopic pregnancy, Infertility and chronic pain in the pelvis.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

  • Infection of the upper female genital tract leads to inflammatory damage which results in Adhesions and total obstruction of the Fallopian Tube.
  • This adhesion leads to the complete loss of ciliated epithelial cells with fallopian tubes resulting in impaired transport of the ovum so there is an increased risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
  • Sometimes this adhesion leads to chronic pelvic pain.

CAUSES OF PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE

  • Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the main causes of PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease) due to unprotected sex.
  • It can occur due to Untreated infections such as Bacterial vaginosis.
  • Another Sexually transmitted infection known as Mycoplasma genitalium increases the risk of PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease)
  • Other causes such as Abortion, Childbirth and various pelvic procedures.

  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Laparoscopy
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
  • ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays)
  • CRP (C-reactive protein)

COMPLICATIONS

Untreated Pelvic inflammatory disorder leads to the formation of Scars and pockets of infections to develop in the reproductive system, which permanently damages the reproductive organs.

  • Ectopic pregnancy- It is due to the formation of scar tissue in the fallopian tubes, which prevents the fertilized egg from getting implanted. It is life-threatening and requires medical attention.
  • Infertility- Damage to reproductive organs which causes infertility
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Tubo-Ovarian Abscess- It is the collection of the pus in the reproductive tract. It is a life-threatening infection.

TREATMENT

  • Antibiotic therapy

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

As per Ayurveda, it is due to an imbalance of tridoshas which is responsible for all health and health-related complications. According to Ayurveda Pelvic inflammatory disease is due to vitiation of Pitta and Vata doshas. As Vata doshas cause pain and difficulty during intercourse. Pitta vitiations are related to inflammation and a burning sensation. Due to the vitiation of Kapha doshas, there is a build-up of Ama (toxins) which gets mixed with blood and further reaches the reproductive system. Mainly Apana Vata is responsible for the management and the proper and undisturbed functions of pelvic organs.

The main aim of the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease is to reduce pain and swelling and to control the aggravation of Pitta and Vata doshas.

  • Basti- Basti is medicated enema which expels out the morbid Vata doshas and supports- strengthens the tissues. All 3 types of Basti are beneficial: Kashaya Basti- decoction enemas, Sneha Basti- Enema with medicated oils and ghee and Uttara Basti- Enema are given into the uterus. Matra Basti- Small doses of oil and ghee enema are given which will strengthen the organs along with pacifying the morbid Vata and Pitta.

What is Ecological Feminism or Ecofeminism & Herbal Remedies For Feminine Health

Abstract

Women are considered more attached to things than men. One of such things is the great ecological system. Yes, women are directly connected to the ecological system. The ecological system and women share great similarities like giving birth, being tolerant, the process of giving or providing loved ones with whatever they want and being selfless. But mostly the both, the woman and the ecological system are exploited for the similarities they share. But the question is who does that? Who is responsible for this exploitation and why? The true answer to this question is mentioned later in this article. This article is about Ecological feminism or ecofeminism and how it's related to Ayurveda.

Ecological Feminism, Feminine Health, Herbal Remedies, Symptoms, Treatment, Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Treatment, Diagnosis

Introduction

Ecological feminism or ecofeminism is a term coined by French feminist Francoise d'Eaubonne in 1974. Ecofeminism uses basic feminist tenets of equality of the genders and also revaluing of non patriarchal or non linear structures. The Ecofeminists examine the effect of gender categories to demonstrate the domination of social norms which are being exerted on women and nature only. The term ecological feminism is given due to the impressive relationship women and nature shares. It's true that women are more close to the ecosystem and value it more than other genders. Environmental changes have different impacts on different genders. Using a gender specific approach for investigating the dynamic relationship between gender equality and environmental changes is the best way to establish complex linkages in a simple way. It also impacts the sustainability and realisation of women's rights and empowerment.

Yes, it's a complex and peculiar thing to understand. But the ideology of this topic is quite deep and needs a detailed understanding. This article will surely help you to establish the correct linkages between feminine gender and ecological system and how with the help of nature provided things the feminine gender can bloom.

The Linkage – Ecological System And Feminism

The linkage bridge of feminism and ecological system starts from the domination both have faced and till now are facing. The patriarchal society and its norms have declared their relation with one another as oppressive. The rules are set: Biology is destiny, superiority of males is natural, a woman must work for one thing that is reproduction not production, a female womb is the site of hysteria, the inferiority in the bodily strength is the sign of mental incapacity as well. Being a woman means being "immanent". On the other hand being a man means "transcendence". This illogical set of differences between men and women is the exact patriarchal society is. Patriarchal societies not only have their dominance on women but also on nature. Women are used by male dominant society for their personal benefits and natural resources are exploited by the same male dominant society for their personal well being. That is the core point from where female and nature gained their connection.

In Ayurveda there are some clear mentions of herbs which are exclusively for women's health. From here we get the idea how even nature adores the relationship between itself and a female.

There are many herbs which are known to ease the problems women face. Even problems like infertility can also be resolved using natural herbs or formulations prepared by these herbs. Some herbs like shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), red rosemary leaf (it's called as woman's herb), brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Ashok (Saraca asoca), Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea), lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) and many others are exclusively for women health.

Obviously the ecological system and women are connected, that's why they share the common feminine gender. As mentioned before both have responsibility to take care, to give birth, to cherish and this affiliation of women with nature puts important responsibility on the shoulders of women who take care of the planet. As the logic of being dominated is clear both women and nature must be allies in the struggle to resist the dominance by the man dominated societies.

This concept needs much deeper thoughts and understanding, about the connection between women and the ecological system. They both are allies because of the dominance and exploitation they have faced from the patriarchal societies.

Conclusion

Ecological feminism or Ecofeminism is a very vast topic and needs a deep understanding of how a gender can be connected with each other. Though when we don't know about things they seem quite odd to us but once in a while we need to think out of the box and accept that there are things which are more meaningful and need more understanding than just being stiff about things. Yes, there are things which need deep connection to understand them completely. That's what the above topic was about a well established connection between female and nature which needs more understanding by the patriarchal society. Ama, Concept Of Toxin, Metabolic Toxin, Ama In Ayurveda, Herbal Remedies, Symptoms, Treatment, Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Treatment, Diagnosis

Introduction

इषत अम्यते पच्यते इति आम:।

According to the above shloka:- Incomplete or partial digestion of food leads to ama.

अम्यते पीडयते स्रोतोसमूहो अनेन इति आम:।

According to the above shloka:- Product which brings discomfort in srotas is ama.

  • Ama liberates certain poisons in amashaya (stomach) leading to manifestation of symptoms of food poisoning.
  • Incurable
  • Onset become insidious
  • Treatment becomes antagonist because if hot substances are employed for the management of ama condition, then ama visa exacerbates, if cold substances are given, which enhances ama condition. Due to contradiction in the lines of treatment of both the conditions, prognosis becomes difficult or incurable.

Treatment Of Ama

Desaturation is of three types:- reducing (langhan), reducing cum digesting (langhan pachnam), letting out of doshas (doshab avsechan). Amongst them, reducing therapy is recommended for those having doshas with a little strength. By reducing therapy agni and vata are increased which dry up the little dosha like the wind and the sun drying up the little water. The reducing cum digesting therapy is prescribed in case of doshas with medium strength. By this therapy, the moderate doshas are dried up in the same way as the moderate quantity of water is dried up by the sun-heat and wind and also by sprinkling dust and ashes. In the case of abundant doshas, only letting out doshas is prescribed, there is no remedy for overflowing a small pool except by breaking down field barriers. The therapy of letting out doshas works in the same way. Dry sudation is also very effective in ama. It is a therapy that reduces the obstruction in the channels and reduces pain and inflammation. There are various herbs which are effective in aam like guduchi, cumin, turmeric, garlic, ginger, aloe vera, black pepper, bhallataka, etc.

Conclusion

In this article we read about the concept of ama that is incomplete or partial digestion of food. The main factor for the formation of ama is deranged functions of agnis. Ama develops inside the amashaya (stomach). If it remains for a longer duration in the stomach in due course of time it attains suktatva, which is termed as ama pradosa or ama visa. Ama, ama dosha and amavisa play an important role in the pathogenesis as well as prognosis of diseases. Abnormal increase in the normal values of blood, urine, stool, semen, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, salivary juice, etc may be understood as a condition. We can manage this disease in ayurveda by langhan (fasting), langhan pachana (reducing cum digesting) and doshas avsechan (letting out of doshas). Mother Fixation & Its Ayurvedic Treatment With Herbal Remedies

ABSTRACT

Abstract

Being a parent is a blessing and a responsibility as well. There is no such love as the love of a mother and love of a father. For a mother her son is always a prince and for a father his daughter is always a princess. Parents' love is the most precious thing a child can have and with that love they get the enthusiasm to win whatever they want. Still with time there are many things which have But there are some complexities with the love of mother and father. Such complexities are being highlighted under many studies which are done. This article is about one such complexity which is called the phenomenon of Mother- Fixation. In this article we will discuss the phenomenon of Mother- Fixation and also will discuss some ayurvedic formulations which can be given in this situation.

Mother Fixation, Causes Of Mother Fixation, Behavioural Changes In Mother Fixation, Herbal Remedies, Symptoms, Treatment, Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Treatment, Diagnosis

INTRODUCTION

Phenomenon of Mother Fixation is described as the behaviour in which a child or even a well grown adult is having overdependence on the mother. There is a presumptive explanation for this and that is overfondness on the part of the mother. It can also be because of the conscious or unconscious holding of a child to a close intimacy beyond the appropriate age of infancy. As due to this assumption that extreme dependence of the child is because of the indulgence of mother and her inordinate bonds of affection, the therapy is done and the therapy consists of the attempts to convince or persuade mother to release the child. This also encourages children directly as well as indirectly towards self reliance and also experiencing the adventures of freedom. Through many studies it is observed that the mother fixation started from the idea of a child clinging with the mother. In many other cases it is also observed that the phenomenon of mother fixation starts when the child is least favoured by the mother. But in most of the cases it is plainly observed that mothers devoted behaviour to provide the child with best possible time and services.

What Causes Mother Fixation?

As mentioned above there are many factors which can start the phenomenon of mother fixation. The summary of such factors are as following

  • Overfondness from the side of Mother
  • When the mothers tends to express devoted behaviour for best possible services and time to the child
  • If the mother is least favouring the child. In Such cases children develop a clinging habit with the mother.
  • Conscious or unconscious holding of the children. This may involve overprotective behaviour of the mother, favouring the child on every mistake, providing the child with everything, providing them with everything so that they do not need to struggle.

Behavioural Changes In Mother Fixation

The value of waist circumference can be used to assess the girth of a person's abdomen. It is usually measured from the hips to the narrowest point between the rib cage and shows if the person is having adequate abdominal fat or not and can be seen being measured at school or workplaces. Waist circumference is said to be having following normal values: -

The Phenomenon of mother fixation is generally seen in boys and girls are usually father fixated. In both of the cases fixation is done from the side of one parent. In the phenomenon of Fixation both male or female children can carry the damage of fixation into their adulthood and thus face problems. In the phenomenon of Mother fixation, the most common symptoms are as follows:

  • Obsession with mother: Not able to do anything without the presence of mother
  • Expect all females (girls/women) to serve him: This starts from a sibling sister, then the relatives and other females as well.
  • May attack: As his mother won't say anything, firstly the hitting starts with the mother and then others are involved too.
  • Have anger issues: Anger issues are common and mostly takes out anger on some female figure
  • Difficulty establishing relationships: As they have a habit of being spoon fed, they are not able to develop healthy and loving relationships. Such males may grow to be jealous or being too controlling.
  • Development of insecurity, anxiety or expectations of being treated as special being
  • Might blame mother for every failure or problems even for their personal grown habits

The Mother fixation is one type of Fixation which is seen in male children or even adults. On the other hand Father fixation is a type of fixation which is commonly seen in the female child or adult as well. In addition, some studies or theories also show that mother and father fixation are pseudo. The main phenomenon which is responsible for all of this is the "Oedipus Complex".

Let's discuss Oedipus complex in a little detail

Oedipus Complex

A psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud has mentioned a theory in 1899. In this theory he states that the oedipus complex refers to the child's desire for sexual involvement with the opposite sex parent, peculiarly the boy's attention towards his mother. This desire is kept out of conscious awareness through a process called repression. Repression is unconscious blocking of unpleasant impulses and emotions. According to his theory children progress through a series of stages for psychosexual development. In his theory he suggests that at each stage the subconscious mind is centred on the pleasure related to some part of the body. These are as follows:

  • Oral Stage: Starting from birth till 18th months
  • Anal Stage: From 18 months to three years
  • Phallic Stage: Starting from three to five
  • Latency: From age five to twelve
  • Genital: After age 12 to adulthood

That's all about the Mother fIxation according to Modern science. Yes, the condition can become psychological if the child is not freed from the dependency of mother and thus he can face problems in future, when his mother won't be there to do things for him. Such children or even adults may develop severe anxiety, low self esteem, not able to rule out what is to be done next, problems with decision making, and are not able to face a lot of situations in life and need someone to instantly blame either their mother or it can be their female partners as well.

These types of conditions are the clear indications why children need to be freed from the dependency of parents so that they should know how to take responsibility for their actions, do their regular work like cooking, cleansing, dealing with society toxicity etc. One of the two parents must take responsibility for making their child independent and also helping them in dealing with situations. The ignore and extra towards the child, both are dangerous, so the parental behaviour must be balanced. Parents need to be strict as well as understanding, that's how good parenting works.
