Periodic Paralysis

INTRODUCTION

Periodic paralysis includes a group of genetic disorders which leads to weakness of the affected area or its paralysis. It can be triggered by some common things such as heat, cold, high carbohydrate food, starvation, excitement, stress or any kind of physical activity. The common mechanism in these conditions includes malfunctioning of the ion channels of cell membranes of skeletal muscles. In this condition malfunctioning leads to leakage of electrically charged ions in or out from the muscle cells which causes depolarization of the muscle cells and restricts the movement of the muscles. So let us see in the below article about its types, causes, diagnosis and Ayurvedic management.

SOME FACTS ABOUT PERIODIC PARALYSIS

  • Periodic Paralysis is a rare genetic disorder which causes sudden attacks of stiffness, weakness and paralysis of muscles.
  • Its episodes start in early childhood or may be from adulthood.
  • The condition is triggered by stress, cold, exercise, fasting or high levels of thyroid hormones.
  • As the patient grows older the condition becomes permanent.
  • For managing this condition it is necessary to take medicines with a perfect diet and lifestyle changes.

TYPES OF PERIODIC PARALYSIS

Periodic Paralysis is a kind of autosomal dominant myopathy which includes following group of disorders:

  • Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis - In this condition potassium leaks from the bloodstream into the muscle cells.
  • Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis - In this condition  potassium leaks into the bloodstream from the muscle cells.
  • Paramiotonia Congenita - This condition accompanies the hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, also sometimes present alone. The first symptom of this condition is muscle contracture that occurs while exercise and activity.
  • Andersen-Tawil Syndrome - This form of periodic paralysis consists of  fainting, heart rhythm problems and risk of sudden death. During its attacks potassium levels can be high, low or even normal.

CAUSES OF PERIODIC PARALYSIS

One of the most common causes of periodic paralysis is altered potassium levels and some diets including carbohydrates along with various physical activities are considered as triggers of periodic paralysis. The common trigger is exercise after resting for a long time. Hyperkalemic type of periodic paralysis as the name suggests occurs due to high potassium levels outside the cell and the hypo is associated with low potassium levels. There is no other cause or trigger of periodic paralysis.

SYMPTOMS OF PERIODIC PARALYSIS

Following are the symptoms experienced by a person with Periodic Paralysis:

  • Muscle pain after exercise
  • Tingling sensations
  • Muscle cramping
  • Permanent weakness in later life
  • Muscle weakness attacks which lasts for a few minutes to days.

DIAGNOSIS OF PERIODIC PARALYSIS

This condition is generally difficult to diagnose and patients usually report wrong diagnosis for many years. They used to take such treatment that may even worsen their condition. A patient may feel migraines upto 50% and various symptoms cause an array of confusion such as headaches, visual, sensory, auditory and speech difficulties.  As we read in the introduction that this condition is genetic so we can diagnose it by DNA examination. Another diagnostic test is Electromyography that is to be done after DNA testing for confirming the type of Periodic Paralysis.

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF PERIODIC PARALYSIS

As this condition is genetic in nature so as per Ayurveda this condition comes under Beej dushti (vitiation of sperm or ovum). In Ayurveda science of genetics is very well explained by Acharya Charaka and Sushruta. The information given by them makes us very well understand the concept of heredity. According to Acharyas genetic disorders occur due to defects in sperm or ovum of the parents. Acharya Charaka explained the whole genetic under three units that are beej (sperm and ovum), beej bhaag (chromosome) and Beejbhagavyava that is gene. Vikriti of these three leads to various disorders and periodic Paralysis is one among them.

Dosha responsible for Periodic paralysis - This condition is a genetic condition but there must be a dosha predominance in the cause of any disease. In case of Periodic Paralysis there is an aggravation of vata dosha which causes various symptoms of Periodic Paralysis. Vata dosha vitiation causes a defect in signal supply from brain to muscles which affects muscle contraction. If there is no proper muscle contraction it results in various symptoms such as muscle stiffness, muscle spasm and at last muscle paralysis. So to manage these symptoms Ayurvedic management is to be by pacifying vata dosha. For this following are remedies by Planet Ayurveda that assist in managing the condition by pacifying vata dosha.
