Orchitis and Its Ayurvedic Management

Abstract

The testis is the male reproductive organ. Testis and Epididymis both are paired structures and both are located within the scrotum. In some cases, the testis gets inflamed due to various factors and this condition is known as orchitis. These are vital structures for reproduction because the spermatogenesis process occurs in the testis. Orchitis mainly affects men in adolescence. The most common cause of orchitis is an infection due to various infective organisms. The symptoms include pain and tenderness in the affected testicle. In this article, we are going to discuss orchitis and its ayurvedic treatment.

Orchitis

Introduction

Orchitis means inflammation of one or both the testis. Both testis and epididymis lie next to each other and it is hard to differentiate whether the testis or epididymis or both are inflamed. Therefore it is known as epididymo-orchitis. The main cause of this disease is bacteria that reach the testis through the bloodstream from other organs. Other causative organisms are viruses and sexually transmitted infections and infections acquired after surgical procedures. Early management is a must in the late cases of orchitis because due to this disease spermatogenesis process is hampered and which leads to infertility or low sperm count and it also deteriorates the quality of the sperm.

Ayurvedic Point Of View On Orchitis

It can be correlated with Vridhi Roga (Testicular enlargement). It can be correlated with Vridhi Roga (Testicular enlargement). In Vridhi Roga all three doshas are aggravated but mainly Vata dosha blocks the arterial blood flow in testicular enlargement (In epididymo Orchitis). Early symptoms of orchitis are a pain in the pubic region, lower backache, pain in the testis and scrotum, retention of flatus, and inflammation in the testis and scrotum. According to Ayurveda Vriddhi roga is of seven types (Vata, Pitta, Kaphaj, Raktaj, Medoj, Mutraj, and Antraj). Vata Vridhi is correlated with Epididymo-orchitis and Pitta Vridhi can be correlated with Suppurative epididymo-orchitis or pyocele.

Signs and Symptoms Of Orchitis

The following sign and symptoms of orchitis are,

  • Unilateral pain in the scrotal region and edema.
  • Burning micturition and dysuria (pain during urination), and urgency.
  • Fever and chills are common.
  • Nausea or vomiting as in the case of testicular torsion.
  • Discharge from the penile meatus prior to acute orchitis.
  • Loss of libido.
  • Infertility at a later stage.
  • Painful ejaculation.
  • Blood in the semen.
  • Tenderness in the scrotum.

Causes Of Orchitis

The following causes of orchitis are,

  • Inflammation of the testis due to any trauma.
  • Mononucleosis is another cause of this condition
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) by E Coli.
  • Gonococci infection.
  • Pyogenic bacteria can cause painful orchitis.
  • Prostatectomy can lead to urinary tract infection.
  • Epididymitis can cause orchitis.
  • Catheterization is the main cause of urinary tract infection (UTI).
  • Tuberculosis and brucellosis through blood flow can reach the testis and cause inflammation.
  • The mumps virus.
  • Schistosomiasis which is a tropical infectious disease can cause epididymo-orchitis.
  • Amiodarone has a side effect that causes orchitis.

Diagnosis For Orchitis

The following diagnostic method for orchitis is,

  • Medical history
  • Physical examination
  • A complete blood count may show some infectious changes. It may show leukocytosis and elevated ESR.
  • Urine culture
  • Urethral smear for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
  • Ultrasonography (USG) of the scrotum may reveal inflammation and fluid (if present).
  • STI screening.

Lifestyle Modification For Orchitis

The following lifestyle modification for orchitis are,

  • Warm and cold compresses to reduce inflammation.
