Herbal Remedies for Hyphema

ABSTRACT

Injury or physical trauma can lead to various problems in the healthy state of the body. These injuries can be more problematic when the affected part is the eye. Eye injuries can result in various vision related difficulties or even total vision loss. There could be various causes and consequences of eye injuries which will vary for different conditions. One such condition caused by an injury to the eye is hyphema. It will be discussed along with its symptoms, causes, and ayurvedic perspective, etc. in the following article.

Hyphema

INTRODUCTION

The accumulation of blood, specifically red blood cells in the eye is called hyphema. The anterior chamber of the eye between the cornea and iris normally contains clear fluid known as  aqueous humor. The accumulation of blood in this anterior part of the eye or between the cornea and iris is referred to as hyphema. The cases of traumatic hyphema is 12 in 100000 in total and that too, almost 70% cases are observed in children. There can be various causes underlying the condition of hyphema which will be discussed as follows.

CAUSES

There could be various causes and risk factors that may result in the condition of hyphema such as blunt injuries from various activities. The majority of the cases are observed in males between the age of 10 years to 20 years. The injury or trauma may be a result of sports, industrial accidents, falls, fights, etc. There could be various blood related conditions that may make the patient more prone to the condition of hyphema such as leukemia, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, etc. Excessive intake of some medicines such as anticoagulants or blood thinning drugs can also result in hyphema. The other causes can be eye surgery, infections in the eye, blood clotting problems, cancer in the eye, etc.

SYMPTOMS

Blunt or penetrating type of trauma can result in traumatic hyphema. A trauma such as blunt trauma can result in increased intraocular pressure. The condition of hyphema will present various types of symptoms such as pain in the eye, the vision may be blurry, cloudy or reddish, etc. The accumulation of fresh red blood can  be seen in the anterior or front of the eye. The sensitivity to light is increased. Hyphema is more common in patients with a poor health status or suffering from various diseases such as diabetes, clotting disorders, hypertension, etc.

DIAGNOSIS

The ophthalmologist will require your detailed medical history including an instance of eye injury previous to the appearance of hyphema. Then, various tests may be required such as examining the intraocular pressure, slit lamp examination, etc. CT scans may also be needed. In cases suggestive of some other underlying condition, tests for sickle cell disease or thalassemia may also be advised. The line of treatment for the condition of hyphema is described as follows.

TREATMENT

The management of hyphema will begin by firstly analyzing the status of bleeding. Usually there is more bleeding in the first three to five days. This excessive bleeding could result in increased intraocular pressure. The one suffering from hyphema should rest on a bed which is raised on the head side and should avoid eye movement. The medicinal eye drops such as atropine can be used to dilate the pupils and to prevent scarring. The eye should be covered with a patch. Depending on the severity of the condition, surgery may also be required. The ayurvedic perspective of the hyphema will be described as follows.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

The hyphema, as described earlier is most commonly a result of trauma, hence it can be correlated with nayan abhigataj roga. The nayan abhighataj roga are classified as the eye disorders that are a result of trauma to the eye and present various symptoms such as vedna (pain), etc. The external trauma will cause disturbance in the internal environment, hence imbalancing the dosha(vata, pitta, kapha).
