Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy is also referred to as idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis and is relatively a common disorder. It is one of the significant causes of sudden death in young people, especially well-trained athletes, affecting both women and men equally. In most patients, it results from asymmetrical septal hypertrophy resulting in a restricted outflow of the left ventricle. It is one of the disorders which is difficult to diagnose but can be managed if diagnosed on time. In this article, we are going to discuss Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy in detail and its treatment through herbal medicine.
WHAT IS HYPERTROPHIC OBSTRUCTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY?
Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy is a disease where the muscles of the heart become abnormally thick. The thick walls of the heart make it difficult for them to pump blood. There are times that it is mostly undiagnosed as many people with this disease live a normal life without facing any problem. However, there are people with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy who might suffer from some common signs like pain in the chest, shortness of breath, and problems in the electric system of the heart. This can eventually result in a life-threatening situation like abnormal rhythms of the heart or sudden death.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTROPHIC OBSTRUCTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY?
Here are the clinical features seen in the disease including:-
- Pain in the chest is especially seen during the exercise.
- Murmuring of heart
- The rapid sensation of pounding as well as pounding heartbeats.
- Difficulty in breathing
COMPLICATIONS
- Atrial fibrillation - The thick walls of the muscles along with abnormal structure formed in heart cells, causing the change in the electrical system of the heart. This leads to an abnormal heartbeat and increases the risk of developing blood clots. This clot can travel all the way to the brain resulting in a stroke.
- Mitral valve problem - These thick muscles block the flow of blood leaving the heart and the valve present between the left ventricle as well as left atrium might not close properly. As a result, the blood might leak back into the left atrium making the condition more serious.
- Blocked Blood flow - Many people who have thick muscles of the heart suffer from the blocked flow of blood. Resulting in shortness of breath causing chest pain, exertion, fainting, and dizziness.
- Heart failure - These thick muscles later become so thick that it is difficult for the heart to fill with an adequate amount of blood. As a result, the heart is not able to pump more blood into the body.
- Dilated cardiomyopathy - It is rarely found that in people with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy the muscles of the heart become weak as well as ineffective. The ventricles become enlarged and the ability to pump blood becomes weak.
- Sudden cardiac failure - It is rarely seen that patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can suffer from death. As there are times that people with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy are not diagnosed with the disease resulting in cardiac deaths.
WHAT CAUSES HYPERTROPHIC OBSTRUCTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is normally caused due to the mutation of genes resulting in the muscles of the heart growing thick abnormally. People mostly with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have a septum that is the muscular wall between the bottom of two chambers of the ventricle becomes thicker as compared to the normal one. This results in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy but there is no significant sign of a blockage in the flow of blood. However, it is mostly possible that it becomes hard for the heart to relax and reduce the flow of blood to the ventricles. As people with this disease have an abnormal arrangement of heart muscle cells triggering an arrhythmia.
RISK FACTORS
Most of the time Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy is inherited from the family. If someone in the family is suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy then there are 50 percent chances that there is the mutation of genes resulting in the disease.
HOW CAN HYPERTROPHIC OBSTRUCTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY BE DIAGNOSED?
It is important to know the medical and family history of the patient and another clinical test that should be done are:-
- Electrocardiogram
- Echocardiogram
- Cardiac MRI
