CAUSES

Improper working of SCN1A gene causes Dravet syndrome. Pathogenic variants or abnormal changes in DNA leads to incorrect working of this gene, even sometimes can completely stop the working of the gene. Changes in the genes of GABRG2, SCN1B, and SCN2A can also result in similar seizure disorders.

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical presentation, history, family history, physical examination and certain diagnostic tests. Genetic testing plays an important role in confirming the diagnosis. Medications should never be started before confirming the diagnosis as many medicines causes worsening of the symptoms in Dravet syndrome usually used to treat seizures.
