The Glossopharyngeal nerve is one of the cranial nerves which connects brain to various parts of the neck, head and trunk. There are total 12 cranial nerves that are present on the bottom of the brain. Function of these nerves is to control action of muscles, carry information from various sense organs to the brain and help in functioning of various major glands and organs like lungs and heart.
INTRODUCTION
Glossopharyngeal nerve is the ninth cranial nerve that supplies sensation to posterior third of tongue, pharynx, tongue and tympanic cavity. In this region one more significant cranial nerve, i.e. Vagua nerve, that helps in swallowing, also passes and significant overlap of both the nerves occur. However sometimes there occur compression of these both nerves at brainstem level (from where both the nerves emerges). This compression is usually caused by a vein or blood vessel passing nearby to them. While exiting the brainstem any small blood vessel can compress the nerves resulting in obstructed supply and complaints. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is caused when this blood vessel compress the 9th cranial nerve, i.e. Glossopharyngeal nerve.
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is presented by the sharp, stabbing pain on the tongue in throat, radiating to tonsils and ears. This agonizing pain can last from fraction of seconds to few minutes. Usually the people above the age of 40-50 suffer from Glossopharyngeal neuralgia. This form of neuralgia occurs rarely in which patient suffers from repeated episodes of severe pain especially in tongue radiating to ear, throat and tonsils.
CAUSES
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is caused due to the compression and irritation of the 9th cranial nerve (Glossopharyngeal nerve). It affects people usually around the age group of 40-50 years. Mostly the cause of this irritation and compression cannot be find out however some of the possible cases of Glossopharyngeal neuralgia are:
- Glossopharyngeal nerve compressed by some blood vessel
- An abnormal growth in the skull resulting in pressurization of 9th crainial nerve
- Infections or tumor in mouth or thorat resulting in compression of the Glossopharyngeal nerve
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Pain is usually pricking in character and occurs on one side only and rarely both the sides are involved. The main symptom is severe agonizing pain in the areas supplied by Golossopharyngeal nerve which are posterior or back part of tongue, ear, back of the throat and nose, tonsil, throat, and larynx. Episodic pain is severe and can occur several times in a day and even can awake the person from sleep due to its severity and pricking nature. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia can be triggered by certain instances like chewing, coughing speaking, laughing, yawning, swallowing, sneezing, taking cold drinks or touching on the affected area.
DIAGNOSIS
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia can be diagnosed symptomatically however the for confirming the cause of the compression of the nerve various tests are required like blood tests, MRI and X ray of head and neck. These tests will help to rule the presence of infection in blood or tumor in head region which might be resulting in pressure on nerve.
TREATMENT
In modern medicine the treatment is focused on controlling the pain. Medicines are prescribed symptomatically and even surgery is required in cases of presence of any mechanical obstruction like tumor. However not many people wants to go for surgery. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia can be treated naturally with the help of herbal medicines.
