Paresthesia

INTRODUCTION

Paresthesia has been experienced by everyone at some point of time and there’s nothing wrong if it is short term and do not occur too often. Most commonly this feeling of pins and needles is felt by the people when their hands or foot fall asleep. This particular part may fall asleep due to sitting crossed legs for long time or sleeping with arm folded under the head which result in exertion of pressure on that particular nerve for long time unknowingly. However it gets back to normal after changing position and when nerve is free of pressure. This is temporary and non-pathological paresthesia and gets resolved without any treatment. However the pathological paresthesia is the one when this sensation persists for longer duration and do reoccur frequently and is due to certain underlying disorder.

Acute paresthesia is without any medical disorder while the chronic paresthesia is caused due to certain medical reason lying behind. Usually the cause is damage of the nerve due to certain trauma or presence of neurological disorder. Diseases affecting the central nervous system like transient ischemic attack, stroke, transverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis or encephalitis can be the reason for paresthesia.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Paresthesia in itself is a symptoms of particular disease conditions. However paresthesia usually affects certain parts of the body like hands, arms, legs and feet and it can be of two types acute or chronic. However the symptoms of paresthesia are:

CAUSES OF PARESTHESIA

Short term or acute paresthesia is usually a result of small period of bad blood circulation or too much pressure on certain nerve. However the long term or chronic paresthesia is caused due to the damage to the particular nerve of that area. Nerve damage is of two types, i.e. Radiculopathy and neuropathy.

  1. Radiculopathy is defined as the condition in which roots of the nerves are irritated, compressed or inflamed due to herniation of the disc that presses on nerve, narrow canal of spinal cord through which nerve is passed to extremities or formation of an abnormal mass compressing the nerve.
  2. Neuropathy is caused due to damage to the nerve chronically, usually due to high blood sugar. It can occur due to several other causes like kidney disease, liver disease, trauma or injury, stroke, certain autoimmune diseases, tumor of brain or around the nerves, certain medications etc.

DIAGNOSIS

Usually the paresthesia is diagnosed based on the clinical history of the patient, physical examination and lab tests. Presence of any of the underlying causes mentioned directs the doctor to go for further examination and tests which eventually leads to confirmation of the disorder. Your doctor can recommend tests like MRI, X ray and CT scans.

TREATMENT

Treatment of paresthesia depends upon the underlying cause. It confirmation and treatment may ease the paresthesia as well. If paresthesia is occurring due to certain lifestyle problem like repetitive movement injury than avoiding it or physical therapy for it can help out. Treatment is completely based on the underlying cause and even some sort of nerve damage are considered to be irreversible.
