What is Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome?
It is a disorder occurring from continued exposure to vibration or working with vibrating tools. It especially occurs in the hands and forearms. It was called Vibration White Finger but the name was changed to HAVS, as there may be symptoms other than white fingers.
What are the Causes of Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome?
Hand-arm vibration syndrome is caused by continued and repeated use of vibrating equipment with hands - power drills, chainsaws, needle guns, and concrete vibrators. It can also be caused by holding or working with vibration. It is unclear how the vibration causes the condition. It is probably caused by minor but repeated bruising in the blood vessels in the small veins and fingers. Over time they can gradually lose some of their function and cause symptoms.
