According to Ayurveda cancer cells are the abnormal cells which lack "Prana" (oxygen). It is against the rule of life-force. Cancer involves all three bodily humors, i.e. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Dosha. One of the doshas predominates and initiates the process of cancer. Now coming to the Hairy cell leukemia (HCL), it is a rare and gradually growing Cancer. In this fatal disease, bone marrow starts producing excess B lymphocytes, type of white blood cells. B cells produced in it are too many and when seen under the microscope, looks hairy. As number of these leukemic cells increase, production of healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and the platelets decreases.
Middle-aged men are more prone to HCL than women. It is considered to be a chronic disease condition as it never goes away completely and relapses are common.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA?
Most people do not have any definite signs and symptoms and disease is usually diagnosed when gone for the test of any other disease. Some commonly experienced signs and symptoms are:
- Fatigue
- Uncomfortable feeling of abdominal fullness making it difficult to eat properly.
- Easy bruising
- Weakness
- Weight loss
- Recurrent episodes of infections
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA?
The exact cause of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is not known. According to studies, this abnormal condition is caused due to the mutation in the DNA which causes bone marrow cells to produce an excess of abnormal B cells. The cause of this mutation in the DNA is not known.

These people have higher chances of developing this condition. Industrial and agricultural chemicals are also known to be responsible for hairy cell leukemia.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS POSED IN HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA (HCL)?
However, it is slowly growing cancer but in long term, it can lead to many complications if not treated in its initial stages. In this there is disease in normal white blood cells which fights against the various infections are decreased. Secondly due to low platelets, easy bruising and internal and external bleeding can occur. As platelets functions to stop bleeding and this ultimately will result in anemia. Anemia is also caused due to the decreased red blood cells. Hairy cell leukemia also increases the risk of other cancers and this increased risk is estimated to come from medications used for treating the HCL.
HOW IS HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?
- Palpation of enlarged spleen is detected during the physical examination.
- Blood test is also done to evaluate the complete blood count which reveals the decreased level of platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells.
- Bone marrow biopsy shows the presence of abnormal white blood cells.
- CT scan- It shows the detailed images of the internal body and reveals enlarged spleen and swollen lymph nodes.
HOW IS HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA TREATED?
In modern medicine, there is no specific treatment for HCL but symptomatic treatment is done including medications, chemotherapy, and surgery.
