Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis - Herbal Remedies, Panchakarma Therapies & Diet

Among the skin diseases, psoriasis is the most troubling and deteriorating disease that affects the skin or the integumentary system. It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, characterized by well- defined erythematous plaques with large, adherent and silvery scales. This disease is also categorized under autoimmune diseases because the prime reason for psoriasis is our overactive immune system.

Overall, the course of the disease is unpredictable but is usually chronic with exacerbations and remissions. Our reduced immunity is the cause of its relapse. As this condition relapses frequently the underlying skin becomes discolored and gives an ugly look to our personality. In Ayurveda, psoriasis is called as 'Kushtha' which is a "Pitta Pradhana Tridoshaj Vyadhi".

psoriasis

WHAT CAUSES PSORIASIS?

  • Dietary factors (Aaharaj karana) – As per Ayurveda certain foodstuffs can cause skin lesions. If a person is consuming excessive hot, spicy, sour, fermented, oily foodstuffs, junk foods, curd, etc.
  • Lifestyle factors (Viharaj karana) – Indulging in activities like excessive exposure to sunlight, sedentary lifestyle, etc. may lead to the vitiation of pitta dosha in our body.
  • Mental factors (Mental status) – Mental tension, and stress can exaggerate the condition.
  • Hereditary factors – Skin diseases can  also be inherited
  • Occupational hazard – Those who work in chemical factories, under high temperatures, they are prone to develop skin problems.
  • History of Skin infections – Some skin infections in later stages may lead to psoriasis.
  • Allergy – History of any allergy may be a triggering factor for this disease. Allergy from particular food items, medications, dust, smoke, pollens and chemicals.
  • Cosmetics – Some external applications may damage our dermis layer.
  • Climatic or environmental changes – Seasonal and climatic changes can provoke the condition.

PRECIPITATING FACTORS

The factors that are responsible for flare-ups are –

  • Medications – Long term use of steroids, beta- blockers can affect our immune system and reduce our immunity. As impaired immunity is one of the main factors for developing diseases in our body.
  • Trauma – Any trauma to the skin can damage the epidermal layer of skin further which gives rise to infection and can cause psoriasis.
  • Anxiety may precipitates some exacerbations.
  • Habits like smoking and drinking alcohol.
  • Unhygienic conditions.

As per Ayurveda some other factors may also be responsible for this condition, they are –

  • Suppression of natural urges especially Chardi vega (vomiting)
  • Consumption of food before the digestion of the previous meal.
  • Virudha aahaar – Regular consumption of unwholesome food leads to the accumulation of toxins in the body.
  • Skin lesion can occur as a complication of improper Panchakarma.
ancient reference

Reference – Charaka samhita / Chikitsa sthana / Kushtha chikitsa / Chapter no. 7 / Shloka no. 7

Meaning – Excessive consumption of newly harvested grains, curd, fish, salt, black gram, radish, fermented foods, jaggery, milk, sesame, etc are the foods can develop psoriasis.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM IN CAUSATION OF PSORIASIS?

As discussed earlier it is an autoimmune disease which means immune system is responsible for psoriasis. Increased epidermal cell proliferation which leads to psoriatic patches is related to the increased replication and metabolism of dermal fibroblasts that is initiated by overactive immune system.

Another involvement of the immune system is denoted by defective and impaired functioning of T helper cells and neutrophils where they anticipate the healthy tissues as antigens and destruct the epidermal layer and form lesions which are scaly and discolored.

Moreover, Ayurveda considers that the weak immune system is responsible for almost all the diseases.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF PSORIASIS?

  1. Plaque psoriasis – This psoriasis is the most common one. Scaly formations have been seen over the affected area, these are silvery and white in color. Individual lesions are well demarcated and range from a few millimeters to several centimeters. The most common sites are – elbows, scalp, and knees. These plaques can be peeled off.
  2. Guttate psoriasis – Small pink spots emerge over the skin. We can observe this type of psoriasis in youths. The rash often appears rapidly and individual lesions are droplet –shaped, small and scaly. This is a self- limiting condition. Most common sites are – trunk and limbs.
  3. Pustular psoriasis – Pus-filled eruptions surrounded by red skin will arise and are not infectious. The common sites are hands and feet.
  4. Inverse psoriasis – Patch of the skin is blood red and shiny that are usually found in the groin, breast and armpit region. This problem is due to sweating and itching.
  5. Erythrodermic psoriasis – Rarest type, but a very serious one, which may affect our other systems like respiratory and cardiovascular, if not treated on time.
  6. Nail psoriasis – This condition is more common in the patients suffering from arthritis which affects our nails of hands and feet. It occurs due to fungal infection. Patients of nail psoriasis exhibit pains, tenderness, discolored nails, pit formation in nails, etc
  7. Currently, one more type has been noticed i.e. ‘Psoriatic arthritis’. Actually, it is not a type, it is a complication of psoriasis.

Herbal Remedies for Hairy Cell Leukemia (HCL) – Ayurvedic Management

According to Ayurveda cancer cells are the abnormal cells which lack "Prana" (oxygen). It is against the rule of life-force. Cancer involves all three bodily humors, i.e. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Dosha. One of the doshas predominates and initiates the process of cancer. Digestive fire decreases which results in building up of the toxic substances, ultimately an environment is created for cancer cells to proliferate. This disease represents a negative form of life-energy.

Hairy Cell Leukemia, herbal remedies

Now coming to the Hairy cell leukemia (HCL), it is a rare and gradually growing Cancer. In this fatal disease, bone marrow starts producing excess B lymphocytes, type of white blood cells. B cells produced in it are too many and when seen under the microscope, looks hairy. As number of these leukemic cells increase, production of healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and the platelets decreases.

Middle-aged men are more prone to HCL than women. It is considered to be a chronic disease condition as it never goes away completely and relapses are common.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA?

Most people do not have any definite signs and symptoms and disease is usually diagnosed when gone for the test of any other disease. Some commonly experienced signs and symptoms are:

  • Fatigue
  • Uncomfortable feeling of abdominal fullness making it difficult to eat properly.

  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Recurrent episodes of infections

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA?

The exact cause of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is not known. According to studies, this abnormal condition is caused due to the mutation in the DNA which causes bone marrow cells to produce an excess of abnormal B cells. The cause of this mutation in the DNA is not known.

While Ayurveda says that cancer is caused due to certain factors like:

  • Toxic environment
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Processed and denatured foods
  • Lack of spiritual effort or purpose in the life of a person
  • Emotional cause
  • Accumulation of the excess of toxins due to any cause

Certain factors that may increase the chances to have HCL(Hairy Cell Leukemia ). Increased exposure to radiation is one of them. People who are usually exposed to harmful radiations due to their occupation like who work on or around x-ray machines, not wearing any protective equipment. These people have higher chances of developing this condition. Industrial and agricultural chemicals are also known to be responsible for hairy cell leukemia.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS POSED IN HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA (HCL)?

However, it is slowly growing cancer but in long term, it can lead to many complications if not treated in its initial stages. In this there is disease in normal white blood cells which fights against the various infections are decreased. Secondly due to low platelets, easy bruising and internal and external bleeding can occur. As platelets functions to stop bleeding and this ultimately will result in anemia. Anemia is also caused due to the decreased red blood cells. Hairy cell leukemia also increases the risk of other cancers and this increased risk is estimated to come from medications used for treating the HCL.

HOW IS HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA DIAGNOSED?

  • Palpation of enlarged spleen is detected during the physical examination.
  • Blood test is also done to evaluate the complete blood count which reveals the decreased level of platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells.
  • Bone marrow biopsy shows the presence of abnormal white blood cells.

Now bend lateral to hold the calf muscle of your leg, if you bend towards right then hold your right leg with the right hand. While doing this, your left hand should be raised upward and face should also face up. Breathe normally while doing this pose. Hold this pose for 30 sec- 1 minute and repeat this for 4-5 times.

A Light Of Hope In Ayurveda To Heal Ulcerative Colitis

Our alimentary system is the major system which provides nourishment to the whole body. Have you ever wondered if this system got affected, that too if the major organs of the GI tract devastated. The end result is our body is unable to absorb nutrients and also incapable to nourish the entire body. That is why ulcerative colitis is a major disease that not only affects the digestive system but also impairs the functions of other systems.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the gastrointestinal tract that causes inflammation and ulcers on the inner mucosal layer of the colon (both large and small intestine). In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated with "Paitikrakatatisaara. The prevalence ratio of this disease is equal in males and females.

CARDINAL FEATURES

Most of the cases I have seen are complaining of irregular bowel movements which are also accompanied by bleeding. There are also associated symptoms like - frequent loose stools; blood and mucus mixed stools, bloating, acidity, abdominal pain, weight loss, a continuous urge to evacuate bowel and indigestion or sometimes the person may experience constipation.

ETIOLOGY

The exact cause is still unknown but there are some factors that play a major role in the origin of this disease are - our unwholesome dietary and lifestyle habits, stress and strains, weak immune and digestive system, few genetic and environmental factors. Another main factor is the accumulation of toxins (ama) inside our body. Long term use of steroids is also a provoking factor of this chronic disease.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

According to Ayurveda, any disease occurs due to the imbalance of the dosha (pitta pradhan tridoshas), dhatus (seven tissues of the body namely Lymph, blood, muscles, fat tissues, bones, bone marrow, sperm or ovum), mala (urine, faeces and sweat) and agni (digestive fire).

In case of Ulcerative colitis, the digestive fire is disrupted which leads to indigestion that in turn leads to the formation and accumulation of toxins which cause an imbalance of the Doshas, the Dhatus and the Malas.

DIAGNOSIS

However, the diagnosis of the ulcerative colitis can be made on a clinical basis. But I do take the help of laboratory investigations like CBC, colonoscopy, etc. to confirm the diagnosis and it helps me to plan the treatment strategy in an appropriate way. Despite the results of investigations, I give importance and preference to the resultant outcomes of pulse diagnosis.

MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

  • As per Ayurveda, the entire universe is composed of five basic elements that are nothing but earth, water, fire, air and space in turns they give rise to Tridoshas (Vata-Pitta-Kapha). If there is any derangement in the equilibrium of these doshas (the basic constituents of the body) person may end up with the disease. So, our aim is to restore and maintain the equilibrium of these doshas.
  • Measures to rejuvenate the eroded skin
  • Detoxification of the body.
  • Measures to strengthen the immune system
  • Measures to establish and protect the Agni (digestive fire)
  • Modifications in the dietary and lifestyle habits
  • Ways to restore normal functions of intestines

Basically, we can achieve these things with the help of herbs, panchakarma therapies, nutritious diet, and by correcting the lifestyle.

HEAL ULCERATIVE COLITIS NATURALLY WITH HERBS” - Nature is the cause of the origin of various diseases on contrary it’s also a reason to cure ailments. So, why not we take help from things that are naturally available.

There are tremendous herbs, minerals and metals present in our nature that are explained beautifully in our Ayurvedic classics which can cure ulcerative colitis from its root and even they avoid the remission of this disease such as kutaja (controls the frequency of stools), prawal (reduces burning sensation and bleeding), arjuna (arrests bleeding), vatsaka (reduces mucus), bael (eliminates toxins), shirisha (early heals ulcers), mukta-shukta (revitalize the organs), giloy (strengthens immune system), musta (promotes absorption) dhaniya-saunf-jeera (maintains digestive fire), dadima (controls bleeding).

"DAILY PRACTICE" Our diet and lifestyle play a major role to maintain our health and to manage diseases. Especially, in ulcerative colitis patients, I recommend the high use of fibrous foods and strictly avoid the use of sour, spicy, fermented foodstuffs, milk and milk products.

"Lifestyle modifications" includes proper follow up of the regimens such as yoga and mild exercises and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Regularly I used to see approx.15 patients of ulcerative colitis in my clinic and as per my experience there are unbeatable effects of these herbs and many of them are completely cured of this condition only because of their regular follow up of medications and a strict rule of following a proper diet and lifestyle instructed by me.

SOME USEFUL TIPS

  • Make a decoction by adding ¼ teaspoon of each dhaniya (coriander) saunf (fennel) and jeraka (cumin) in 1 cup of water boil it until the quantity reduced to ½ cup.
  • Make a decoction of pomegranate peels by boiling them in a cup of water, it helps to arrest bleeding.
  • Rose petal juice
  • Marigold flower juice

Ayurvedic Management For Agnosia

Agnosia is a Greek word which means 'absence of knowledge'. This term was coined by 'Sigmund Freud' in 1891. Agnosia is a neurological disorder which is characterized by the loss of ability to recognize things. Here, the person affected by it is unable to perceive the objects, persons, places, shapes, sounds and smells.

Ayurvedic Management For Agnosia

The interesting fact is that all the senses are intact and there is no defect at all but due to some defect in the brain like- damage of occipitotemporal border which may occur because of head injury, a person may lose these sensory abilities. But agnosia will affect only a single modality at a time, it's either auditory, speech or vision. In this condition, a person who is affected by agnosia can interact with the world normally. There are different types of agnosia.

As per Ayurveda, this is a Tridoshaj Vyadhi with the predominance of vata dosha which affects all the dhatus especially the majja dhatu of the brain.

WHAT CAUSES AGNOSIA?

The exact cause of the disease is still unknown. But there are some probable causes that contribute agnosia are –

  • Any trauma to the parts of the brain that stores information and knowledge
  • Other diseases like – dementia, stroke, encephalitis, tumor and other neurological disorders
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Any history of developmental disorders

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF AGNOSIA?

Agnosia is broadly classified into three types, they are –

1. Visual Agnosia

Visual agnosia is defined as an inability to recognize visual objects. It is further classified into the two main categories. They are – Apperceptive visual agnosia and associative visual agnosia.

Apperceptive visual agnosia is the one in which a person is not able to see the objects. This happens due to damage to the posterior part of the right hemisphere (in the brain).

On the contrary, in associative visual agnosia, the person is able to perceive the thing but unable to name that thing or object. Usually, defects are observed in the left and right hemispheres at the occipitotemporal border.

Moreover, the apperceptive type is a failure to perceive and associative is the one where perception occurs but person is a failure to recognize the things.

There is one more type by the name – Prosopagnosia (face blindness) where the person could not recognize faces. So, individuals who have prosopagnosia find difficulty in recognizing friends, family members, relatives, etc.

2. Auditory Agnosia

In this type of agnosia, a person feels difficulty to distinguish between voice and speech even from the other environmental sounds. Further it is of 2 types – Semantic (damage to the left hemisphere) and discriminative (lesion in the right hemisphere).

3. Tactile Agnosia

In this agnosia, the person fails to recognize things on touch. Here, an individual can feel the weight of the object but can't recognize its use. This occurs due to lesions in the parietal lobe of the brain.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AGNOSIA?

  • Inability to recognize people.
  • Unable to recognize objects, shapes and colors.
  • Unable to identify the sound.

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis can be made through a variety of psychological tests, CT scan (Computed tomography) and MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)

TREATMENT

There is no exact management strategy to deal with Agnosia but some organizations are really working hard in finding solutions of these rare diseases to evaluate the exact cause and provide a fruitful treatment to sufferers.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CARCINOID TUMOR?

As discussed, in initial stages there are no signs and symptoms of this disease. Signs and symptoms depend upon the location of this tumor.

In Lungs:

WHAT CAN BE THE CAUSES OF CARCINOID TUMOR?

An exact cause of carcinoid tumor is not known but it also develops as other cancers develop by the mutation of the DNA in cells. Due to the abnormal mutations in these cells, they grow and divide where healthy cells would normally die. These cells start accumulating and form a tumor and these cancerous cells invade the healthy cells nearby and spread in to other parts of the body.

In carcinoid tumor, this cancer develops in the neuroendocrine cells found in various parts of the body. Hormones produced by these cells are altered by the cancerous cells and produce signs and symptoms.

WHAT CAN BE THE RISK FACTORS FOR CARCINOID TUMOR?

  • Family history of endocrine neoplasia increases the risk of developing carcinoid tumor.

HOW CAN CARCINOID TUMOR BE TREATED IN AYURVEDA?

As per Ayurveda cancer is compared to arbud. Arbud is developed due to the vitiation of dhatus and doshas especially mamsa dhatu, rakta dhatu and kapha dosha. Vitiated Kapha dosha blocks the channels and mamsa dhatu starts collecting and forms a piece of mass. This mass keeps on growing due to abnormal growth of cells. It travels to various parts of the body through blood and settles down there. This vicious cycle goes on and cancer keeps on spreading to different organs.

Planet Ayurveda has come up with the Crab care pack that is used to treat various types of cancer. Herbs present in these remedies work amazingly and synergistically to fight against cancer cells. How Ayurveda can help in treating sclerosing cholangitis?

Sclerosing cholangitis is a disorder characterized by the inflammation which causes scars within the bile ducts. Due to scars, the bile ducts become hard and narrow and gradually serious liver damage occurs such as liver failure, repeated infections and tumors of the bile duct. The function of bile duct is that they carry the digestive liquid bile from the liver to the small intestine.

How Ayurveda can help in treating sclerosing cholangitis

This disease progresses slowly and according to modern medicine, a liver transplant is the only solution but the disease may recur in the transplanted liver as well.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF SCLEROSING CHOLANGITIS?

There is no known reason for sclerosing cholangitis. According to some researchers, the reaction of immune system to an infection or a toxin may trigger the disease in some people.

Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease may also develop sclerosing cholangitis and if sclerosing cholangitis is diagnosed, it is important to look for inflammatory bowel disease because there is a greater risk of developing colon cancer.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SCLEROSING CHOLANGITIS?

Early symptoms include:-

  • Itching
  • Fatigue

As the disease progresses, signs and symptoms that may appear are:-

  • Pain in the upper right part of the abdomen
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Yellow colour of the skin
  • Enlarged spleen and liver
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Certain tests and procedures that are used to diagnose sclerosing cholangitis are:

  • Liver function blood tests: A blood test showing functions of liver and liver enzymes is done.
  • Liver Biopsy: It is a procedure that includes removing a piece of liver tissue and sent for laboratory testing. It can help to determine the extent of liver damage.
  • MRI of bile ducts: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a test of choice to diagnose this condition and it makes images of the liver and bile ducts.

In modern medicine, the treatment of sclerosing cholangitis focuses on the management of complications as well as monitoring the liver damage but there are no medications available that can slow or reverse the liver damage. A liver transplant is the only option available for sclerosing cholangitis.

HOW AYURVEDA CAN HELP IN TREATING SCLEROSING CHOLANGITIS?

Liver transplantation is largely unavailable and unaffordable for most of the patients. It is a complex procedure as it requires sophisticated infrastructure, expert medical team, expensive drugs, preservation of the transplanted organ, prolonged stay in the ICU and a lifelong commitment to immunosuppressants. Therefore there is a need for safe and alternative treatment.

Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda has generated an extensive empirical knowledge in the treatment over several centuries.

According to Ayurveda, the liver is the engine of the body and which is the seat of Pitta dosha and is composed of five bhutagnis (digestive fire) that transform Rasa dhatu (clear part of the plasma) into blood tissue. If the flame of digestive fire or agni is too high or too low, then Rasa dhatu will not properly enter into the blood stream and toxins will enter into the blood. The toxins getting stored in the liver may lead to the allergic conditions, digestive problems, fatigue etc. If this imbalance continues for a longer duration then it will lead to serious disorders of the liver.

So, according to Ayurveda, the best way to prevent liver disorders is to keep Pitta dosha balanced. Pitta pacifying diet should be included.

Functions of bile with ancient reference

Reference: Astang Hridyam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 12, Shlok No. 12

Meaning: In this shloka, the function of Ranjak Pitta is explained. The pitta which is located in Amashya (stomach) is known as Ranjak Pitta which converts the useful part of the digestion into the blood. Hence, it converts rasa dhatu (the clear part of the plasma) into rakt dhatu (blood tissue).
