What is the Ayurvedic treatment of Autoimmune Bullous Skin Disease?

Autoimmune bullous skin disease is a rare disorder which is characterized by over-lapping features, resistant to treatment and potential fatality. It needs quick and proper management to avoid fatal complications.

It is an auto-immune disorder that occurs when the immune system attacks the skin and causes blistering. It is more common in men above the age of 60 years but can also occur in children as well. The blisters can form on the lower abdomen, armpits, thighs etc.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF AUTO-IMMUNE BULLOUS SKIN DISORDER?

As the name suggests, it is an auto-immune disorder which is caused when the immune system attacks the thin layer of tissue below the outer layer of the skin. The immune system makes protein known as anti-bodies. These anti-bodies attack the substances that hold the epidermis (outer) and inner (dermis) layers of the skin altogether. The damage causes the two layers of the skin to separate and as a result fluid collects between the two and forms blisters.

In auto-immune disorders, with prolonged anti-inflammatory stress, the immune system turns against its host and attacks the body's own tissues.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF AUTO-IMMUNE BULLOUS SKIN DISORDER?

  • Itching is the first symptom
  • The large areas may develop looking like hives before the appearance of blisters.
  • Blisters occur all over the body with burning sensation, thirst and fever.
  • Eczema or a hive like rash
  • Because of infected skin erosions, life-threatening sepsis can develop.
  • Small blisters or sores in the mouth

HOW AYURVEDA IS USEFUL IN AUTO-IMMUNE BULLOUS SKIN DISEASE?

According to Ayurveda, this condition is caused due to the vitiation of all the three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha with the predominance of Pitta and Kapha dosha. This condition may be co-related to Visphotaka in Ayurveda.

Charak Samhita, Part 2, Chikitsasthanam, Kushtchikitsadhyaya: 7, Shlok No. 9 & 10

Reference: Charak Samhita, Part 2, Chikitsasthanam, Kushtchikitsadhyaya: 7, Shlok No. 9 & 10

Meaning: The pathogenesis of skin disorders are explained in these shlokas. According to these shlokas, vitiated Vata, Pitta and Kapha vitiate the skin, blood, muscles and interstitial fluids. All these seven factors are responsible for skin disorders and these seven factors cause eighteen types of skin disorders. Any skin disorder is not caused due to the vitiation of one dosha only.

DIAGNOSIS

To confirm the diagnosis, some blood tests may be done and skin biopsy may also be performed by taking a small sample of the affected skin.

TREATMENT

In conventional treatment, anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for various auto-immune disorders but due to the side effects and high cost of these anti-inflammatory drugs, patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative modalities (CAM) of treatment.

In the long run, corticosteroids can increase the risk of weak bones, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.
