What Are The Health Benefits Of Tulsi / Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)?

According to Ayurvedic scriptures and traditions, the herb Tulsi has immense beneficial properties due to which, it is worshipped in every house and is considered as a sacred herb.

INTRODUCTION

In India, basil is a familiar plant to all. The botanical name of Tulsi is Ocimum sanctum. It has hot potency. So, intake of tulsi during summer season should be in limited amounts. For adults, grind 25-100 tulsi leaves and for children, grind 5-25 leaves and make the paste by adding honey or jaggery and take this mixture 2-3 times a day for 3 months regularly.

WHAT ARE THE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF TULSI?

Take tulsi leaves empty stomach in the morning. It helps in the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, neuralgia, swelling due to kidney failure, kidney stones, leucoderma, increase of cholesterol in blood, obesity, constipation, gastritis, dysentery, colitis, disorders of prostate in males, mental problems in children, cold, cough, sinusitis, fractured bones, cancer, asthma, allergies, whooping cough, measles, headache and migraine.

Tulsi plant should be planted in every home to maintain non-polluting atmosphere.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF TULSI?

1. Migraine due to heat: Take 5 tulsi leaves and grind black pepper. Mix tulsi leaves along with black pepper. Add this mixture to 1 glass of water and drink it daily for 21 days in the morning.

2. In the morning after defecation, swallow 5 tulsi leaves with water. It helps in increasing strength as well as memory.

3. The 8 drops of juice of tulsi leaves mixed with water should be taken regularly. This remedy helps in giving strength to the muscles and bones. The consumption of seeds of tulsi leaves mixed in warm milk is also beneficial.

4. Epilepsy: Massaging the whole body of epilepsy patient with crushed basil leaves is quite beneficial.

5. Fainting: Crush tulsi leaves to make juice. Add some salt to this juice and instillation of this juice in the nostrils helps in fainting.

6. Malaria: Regular intake of tulsi leaves helps to prevent malaria. In malaria, take 15 tulsi leaves and 10 black pepper seeds.

7. Tulsi helps in the treatment of all kinds of fevers. Make decoction of 20 tulsi leaves, 10 black pepper seeds and 1 spoon of sugar.

8. Cough, Cold, Inflammation of the lungs: Take equal quantities of dried tulsi leaves, camphor, catechu and cardamom and take sugar equal to 9 times of this mixture. Take a pinch of this mixture twice a day. This mixture helps in expelling the accumulated phlegm from the lungs.

9. Fever: In fever, take 10 tulsi leaves, 3 gm dried ginger powder, 5 cloves and 21 black pepper seeds and sugar according to taste. Boil the mixture in water and when water remains half, give it to the patient. This remedy is very beneficial for fever.

10. Anxiety during fever: If fever is accompanied by anxiety, take juice of tulsi leaves.

11. Chronic fever and cough: If cough is associated with chest pain, then intake juice of tulsi leaves with candy sugar is beneficial.

12. Irritation in the throat: If there is an irritation in the throat due to the intake of sour food products, then take the mixture prepared from 25 tulsi leaves with ginger and honey.

13. Cold and Fever: Intake of 15 tulsi leaves and 4 black pepper seeds regularly improves immunity and cures cold and fever.

14. Tulsi Tea: Drinking tea is a habit all over the world but drinking tea is very harmful. Instead of taking tea regularly, tulsi tea is very useful as it helps in maintaining the health of an individual.

How to prepare tulsi tea: Take 50 gram dried tulsi leaves, 10 gm each of fennel, brahmi (Centellaasiatica), red sandalwood, cardamom, cinnamon. Grind all these ingredients and use this mixture in place of tea. Intake of this tea helps in common cold, cough, fever and sneezing.

15. Uses of tulsi in cough:

  • Roast 5 cloves and chew these cloves with tulsi leaves. This remedy helps in all types of cough.
  • Decoction prepared from tulsi leaves also helps in curing all types of fevers.
  • Dried tulsi leaves and 4 gm of sugar candy helps in treating cough and other respiratory disorders.
  • Crush tulsi leaves and black pepper in equal quantities. Take a pinch of this powder 4 times a day. It helps in treating cough and whooping cough.
  • Equal quantities of juice of tulsi, ginger and onion helps in treating cough and also helps in expelling phlegm.
  • Decoction prepared from 12 gm tulsi leaves, sugar and cow's milk helps in treating cough and chest pain.
  • Dried powder prepared from tulsi leaves mixed with honey also helps in treating cough.
  • Extract equal quantities of juice of tulsi leaves and ginger. Add 1 spoon of honey to this mixture. This remedy also helps in treating cough.
  • Mix 3 gm juice of tulsi leaves, 6 gm sugar candy and 3 seeds of black pepper. This remedy helps in chest tightness, chronic fever and cough.

16. Pneumonia: Consuming 20 tulsi leaves and 5 black pepper seeds help in treating pneumonia.

17. Digestion: Consuming freshly prepared tulsi leaves with water helps in treating indigestion. Intake of 5 tulsi leaves with water helps in the digestion of food.

18. Migraine: Take 1/4 powder of tulsi leaves with honey.

19. Headache: Take powder of tulsi leaves. It helps in the treatment of chronic headache as well as insanity in patients. Take juice of tulsi leaves and lemon juice in equal quantities for headache.

20. Cold: Take 10 leaves of tulsi, 5 black pepper seeds and boil them in water. Add some amount of jaggery, cow's ghee or rock salt. It helps in cold.

  • Decoction prepared from tulsi leaves helps in curing cold. Boil tulsi leaves, black pepper and dried ginger powder to make tea and add sugar and milk. Consuming this tea also helps in the treatment of cold.
  • The dried powder of tulsi leaves helps in curing running nose.
  • The leaves of tulsi mixed with honey helps in cold, cough and phlegm in children.

21. Dysentery: The leaves of tulsi when taken with sugar helps in the treatment of dysentery.

22. Stomach Pain: Drinking tulsi and ginger juice in equal quantities helps in abdominal pain.

23. Colic: Drinking 10 gm tulsi leaves helps in the treatment of colic pain. Decoction prepared from tulsi leaves helps in diarrhoea. This remedy also helps in indigestion.

24. Vomiting: The juice prepared from tulsi leaves helps in stopping vomiting. It also helps in treating worms of the stomach. Taking tulsi juice with honey is a useful remedy for nausea.

25. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): Take 3 gm each of tulsi leaves powder and sugar for IBS.

26. Indigestion or Low Digestive Fire: Take 20 tulsi leaves and 5 black pepper seeds. Chew this mixture after food. It helps in stimulating the digestive fire. By adding rock salt and dried ginger to the decoction of tulsi leaves helps in indigestion.

27. Hiccups: Consuming 12 grams tulsi juice with 6 gm honey stops hiccups.

28. Liver Enlargement: Boil 10 gm tulsi leaves in 1 glass of water. Boil until the water remains to one-half. This water helps in reducing the size of enlarged liver thus helps in liver enlargement.

29. Blood in the nose: Instillation of 4-5 drops of tulsi leaves in the nostrils helps in stopping bleeding from the nostrils.

30. Wounds and Blisters in the nose: Scrub the dried tulsi leaves powder on the nose. It helps in the treatment of wounds and blisters.

31. Ear ache or loss of hearing: Warm the juice of tulsi leaves and instill 3-4 drops of this juice in the ears which helps in ear ache.

32. Respiratory Disorders in Children: For these disorders, mix the juice of tulsi leaves with 5 drops of honey. This remedy works wonder for the respiratory disorders in children.

33. Dizziness: For vertigo, crush leaves of tulsi and add 1 spoon of honey.

34. Loo (heat) in summer season: For dizziness associated with loo in summer season, take juice of 5 tulsi leaves mixed with one spoon of sugar.

35. Leucorrhoea: Take juice of tulsi leaves and honey in equal quantities twice a day or take tulsi leaves juice mixed with cumin seeds.

36. Unusual bleeding in women: Take 1/4th spoon powder of the root of tulsi with water.

37. For ease in labour pain: By taking of tulsi leaves ease pain during labour.

38. Amenorrhoea: The seeds of tulsi plant are very useful in the treatment of amenorrhoea.

39. Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Mixing the juice of tulsi leaves with sugar is beneficial in the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding.

40. Contraceptive: Consumption of one cup of decoction of tulsi leaves after 3 days of menstrual cycle does not support pregnancy and is a safe remedy for contraception.

41. Infertility: During menstruation, the seeds of tulsi leaves should be chewed or make decoction of the leaves of seeds. If there is a problem in conception, use this remedy for 1 month regularly. This helps in providing strength to the uterus muscles and thus supports fertility.

42. Burning sensation during urination: Chewing 20 tulsi leaves help in the burning sensation during urination.

43. Blisters in the mouth: Blisters in the mouth can be cured by chewing tulsi and jasmine leaves.

44. Skin Disorders: Take equal quantities of juice of tulsi and lemon. Apply on the affected area on the skin. It also helps in the treatment of acne and pimples on the skin.

45. Wounds: Sprinkle the powder of dried tulsi leaves helps in clearing the wounds. The paste of grinded leaves can also be applied on the wounds.

46. Worms in the wounds: Boil tulsi leaves in water and wash the wounds with this boiled water. Sprinkle the powder of tulsi leaves on the wounds.

47. Burning, Itching and Fungicide: Take 250 gm juice of tulsi leaves and 250 gm coconut oil. Mix these two ingredients and heat them on a low flame. Now add 15 gm wax to this mixture. This remedy is very beneficial.

48. Leucoderma, Itching and Wounds: Apply oil prepared from tulsi leaves on the affected area thrice a day.

49. Child Problems: For various child disorders such as stomach disorders, dysentery, cold, fever, cough, vomiting etc., take juice prepared from tulsi leaves and add sugar to it. Give a small spoon of this mixture to children once a day. Regular use of this mixture helps in maintaining the health of child.

50. For maintaining child's health, take tulsi and ginger juice in equal quantities and heat it on the low flame. On cooling, add honey and should be given to children.

51. Asthma: The juice of tulsi leaves helps in expelling out phlegm. That's why, tulsi juice is useful in cough and cold. The juice of tulsi, honey and onion when mixed together are useful in treating asthma and cough.

52. In heart disorders and tonsilitis, wearing necklace prepared from tulsi is very beneficial.

53. Overall Health:

  • A person who takes 6 tulsi leaves regularly is protected from all sorts of diseases.
  • Consuming grinded tulsi leaves with 1 spoon of honey is very beneficial. It helps in keeping the body healthy and face glowing.

54. Sciatica Pain: In sciatica pain, boil tulsi leaves in water and apply it in vapour form on the affected area.

55. Obesity: Consuming 10 drops of tulsi leaves and 2 spoons of honey in a glass of water helps in reducing weight.

56. Cardiac tonic: During winter season, take 10 tulsi leaves, 4 black pepper seeds, 4 almonds and grind them. Mix all these ingredients in half cup water. This remedy helps in treating all kinds of heart disorders.

57. Purification of Water: Water gets purified by adding tulsi leaves into it.

58. Burning due to fire: Add juice of tulsi leaves to coconut oil and applying on the affected area helps in burning sensation due to fire and prevents the formation of blisters and wounds get cured.

59. Memory Support: Take 10 tulsi leaves, 5 black pepper seeds and 5 almonds. Add these ingredients to the milk and drink the mixture.

60. Pigmentation, Acne, Pimples: Mix tulsi leaves powder with white butter and apply on the face. For boils, boil tulsi leaves in water and wash the boils with this water. Also apply the fresh grinded leaves on the boils.

61. Hair fall or Graying of hair: In premature graying of hair and hair fall, make a paste of tulsi leaves and amla powder in water and apply on hair. Wash hair after 10 minutes.

62. Nocturnal Emission: Grind the roots of tulsi root and add this semi-solid paste in water. This remedy helps in nocturnal emission.

63. Sexual weakness in males: Take 60 gm tulsi seeds and 75 gm sugar candy. Mix these two ingredients and grind them. Take this powder regularly with cow's milk.

64. Premature ejaculation: Take the root of tulsi or tulsi seeds in the betel leaf and chew it.

65. Defects of semen: Take 3 gm seeds of tulsi or root powder. Add equal quantity of old jaggery and consume this mixture with warm milk.

66. Piles: Grind tulsi leaves and apply in the form of paste on the affected area.

67. Small Pox: Grind tulsi leaves and carom and take this mixture regularly. It helps in reducing the fever associated with small pox.

68. In case of toxic bite by scorpion or snake, add tulsi leaves to water and should be given to the patient.

69. For mosquito bite, apply juice of tulsi leaves on the whole body.
