Von Willebrand disease is a common, lifelong bleeding disorder which results from a deficiency or abnormality of a multi-adhesive protein called 'Von Willebrand factor' (VWF) which helps the blood to clot.
The VWF protein is responsible for binding together the platelets, which are the tiny cells that circulate in the blood to plug broken blood vessels and stop bleeding. Low levels of functional VWF in people suffering from Von Willebrand disease affect the clotting ability of the platelets, thereby leading to prolonged bleeding.
Von Willebrand disease is generally considered an inherited bleeding disorder, but it can also sometimes develop later in life. The disease affects both men and women at the same rate.
‘Type 3’ Von Willebrand disease is rare, but the most severe, form of the bleeding disorder.
In the most common 'Type 1' of the disease, the level of platelets in the blood is lower than normal; while in 'Type 2' of the disease, the levels of VWF are normal, but it cannot work properly due to structural or functional defects. However, in Type 3 Von Willebrand disease, the body produces very little or no VWF, and potentially puts an individual at the risk of heavy bleeding which can be so severe that it may include joint, muscle or gastrointestinal bleeding.
Von Willebrand disease can lead to several health complications, such as Anaemia (iron deficiency in the body), pain and swelling, and even death from uncontrolled bleeding. The risk of complications resulting can be higher for women than in men, because of a higher chance of bleeding during menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE
The main cause behind the occurrence of Von Willebrand disease is a genetic mutation, which is inherited by an affected individual from one or both parents. The inherited faulty gene causes problems with the VWF protein which plays a key role in the blood-clotting process.
People who have inherited only one copy of the mutated gene usually develop Type 1 or Type 2 Von Willebrand disease, but people who inherit a mutated gene from both parents suffer from Type 3 Von Willebrand disease.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE
The symptoms of Von Willebrand disease may be mild or severe and may start at any age. The symptoms generally depend on the type of Von Willebrand disease a person may be suffering from. However, some of the symptoms common to all the three types of the disease are:
- Easy bruising
- Getting large and lumpy bruises
- Excessive and long-lasting nosebleeds
- Bleeding from the gums
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding after tooth removal or surgery
- Abnormally heavy bleeding during menstruation (in women)
- Blood in urine due to bleeding in the kidneys or bladder
- Blood in stool (feces) due to bleeding in intestines or stomach.
VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE: AYURVEDIC VIEWPOINT
According to Ayurveda, blood tissue is one of the seven tissues (Dhatu) of the body. Since blood (Rakta) is associated with the body’s Pitta dosha, bleeding disorders like Von Willebrand disease mostly occur due to a Pitta imbalance.
In Ayurveda, a collective term used for all bleeding disorders is ‘Raktapitta.’ Ayurvedic experts believe that bleeding disorders are usually caused by excessive intake of warm (ushna), penetrative (teekshna), salty (lavana), sour (amla), and spicy (vidahi) foods, as well as other foods or drinks which can aggravate Pitta dosha. Moreover, in some cases, excessive exposure to the sun, or working n the sun for long periods, can also cause bleeding disorders.
VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE: TREATMENT
The treatment of Von Willebrand disease is chiefly focused on stopping or preventing bleeding episodes, particularly with the help of medications which enable the formation of blood clots by platelets.
Though the treatment plan for patients suffering from Von Willebrand disease usually varies in accordance with the type of condition they have, some of the treatment options for the disease include drug therapies, nonreplacement therapy, replacement therapy, and topical treatments.
