According to Ayurveda, Pitta signifies fire and it governs all the transformation, metabolism in the body as well as in the mind. This dosha is responsible for the digestion of food. It is responsible for digestive fire or "agni" of the body. At the mind level, it gives the power to discriminate between right and wrong. It comprises fire and water elements. The Pitta dosha is related with blood. Hence, the cause of most of the blood disorders is imbalance of Pitta dosha.
TYPES OF PITTA DOSHA
Though Pitta is only one but based on the location and functions, it is divided into five types:
- Pachak Pitta
- Ranjak Pitta
- Sadhak Pitta
- Alochak Pitta
- Bhrajak Pitta
1. Pachak Pitta
As the name indicates, it is located between stomach and large intestine. This Pitta is predominant with fire element but has less water element. Its main function is to divide the food into essence and waste. Among all the types of Pitta, Pachaka Pitta is the dominant one.
2. Ranjak Pitta
This Pitta is located in stomach (duodenum). The function of Ranjak Pitta is to convert the useful part of the essence into the blood. It converts Rasa Dhatu into Rakta Dhatu.
3. Sadhak Pitta
This Pitta is located in the heart. The main function of Sadhak Pitta is to provide intelligence, wisdom etc.
4. Alochak Pitta
This Pitta is located in eyes therefore helps in vision.
5. Bhrajak Pitta
This type of Pitta resides in the skin and helps in providing colour to the skin as well as complexion.
ROLE OF PITTA DOSHA IN BALANCING SKIN PROBLEMS
As discussed above, Bhrajak Pitta and Ranjak Pitta types are responsible for providing lustrous skin as well as imparting colour to the skin. Thus, imbalance of these types of Pitta doshas are responsible for various skin disorders.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF VITIATED PITTA DOSHA?
Due to the excessive consumption of unctuous foods such as oily and fried foods, there is a disturbance in the metabolism causing excessive fat deposition as well as errors in metabolism. These foods don't get digested easily and leads to the formation of "Ama" (endotoxins) in the body. This ama blocks the channel and therefore deprives the tissues from nutrition including skin. These circulating toxins damage the skin and also hamper skin defenses. Therefore, the skin becomes susceptible to various skin disorders.
