Eruptive Syringoma - Causes, Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

ERUPTIVE SYRINGOMA: OVERVIEW

Eruptive syringoma

Eruptive syringoma is an extremely rare variant of a condition called 'Syringoma,' which is a common benign tumor of eccrine sweat ducts. This distinctive form of Syringoma was first described in 1887, by Jacquet and Darier.

Besides Eruptive syringoma, the other main variants of Syringoma are: a localized variant, a familial form, and a variant linked to Down syndrome.

Eruptive syringoma can be defined, in scientific terms, as a benign adnexal tumor of the intraepidermal portion of eccrine sweat ducts. This eccrine-derived tumor generally occurs during childhood or at puberty.

Eruptive syringoma characteristically manifests itself in the form of successive crops of numerous, disseminated lesions (papules) which appear on the anterior surfaces of the trunk, neck, arms, chest, and the peri-umbilical region, typically in a bilateral, symmetrical distribution. Rarely, the occurrence of the lesions affects a wider part of the body.

The small, skin-coloured lesions which typically mark the occurrence of Eruptive syringoma are usually asymptomatic, but pruritus has been reported in some cases. The lesions may disappear spontaneously in some cases or may remain stationary throughout the life.

Eruptive syringoma can affect both the sexes, though it is more frequently reported in adult women as compared to men.

ERUPTIVE SYRINGOMA: CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

Generally, most Syringomas are caused due to any activity which increases the productivity of sweat glands, thereby leading to the growth of tumor. In addition, Syringomas may occur because of some other medical condition, like Diabetes, Down syndrome, Marfan’s syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

However, in some rare cases, an affected individual may have a genetic predisposition towards developing any of the different variants of Syringoma.

Some of the common symptoms of Eruptive syringoma are:

  • Appearance of successive crops of small, disseminated yellowish lesions in atypical sites
  • Bilateral and symmetrical distribution of lesions on affected sites
  • Pain in the affected skin areas
  • Intense itchiness in affected skin areas
  • Redness of affected skin.

ERUPTIVE SYRINGOMA: AYURVEDIC VIEWPOINT

According to Ayurveda, most of the diseases that affect human beings are caused due to an imbalance in the body's three energies (doshas) -- Vata, Pitta and Kapha -- and also because of following a dietary or lifestyle pattern which is against the prakriti (nature) of an individual.

With Ayurveda highlighting the fact that the skin has six layers, any specific skin disorder is established profoundly into different tissues, like fat, muscles, blood and so on. Ayurvedic experts believe that the main reason behind the occurrence of skin diseases, including Eruptive syringoma, is an imbalance in all the three doshas, primarily the Pitta dosha.

Since Pitta symbolizes 'heat' or 'fire,' the Ayurvedic treatment of skin diseases basically involves the elimination of all those foods/activities which increase the fire element in the body. In addition, herbal formulations specifically prepared by Ayurvedic experts for treating skin problems, like Eruptive syringoma, in an affected individual can be extremely beneficial. Ayurvedic skin treatments usually take a few weeks to remove the indications of the underlying disease.

ERUPTIVE SYRINGOMA: TREATMENT

There is no standard treatment for Eruptive syringoma. Hence, the options available in modern medicine to treat the condition are mostly cosmetic, though they cannot eliminate the potential risk of recurrence. These options may include dermabrasion, different methods of excision, chemical peeling, cryosurgery, electrodesiccation, and oral/topical retinoids. However, it is important to note that surgical and chemical treatment of Eruptive Syringoma may cause scarring of the skin.
