OVERVIEW
Tongue cancer is a type of mouth cancer or oral cancer which originates in the cells of the tongue. This cancer typically causes tumors or lesions on the tongue of the affected individuals. The potential risk of tongue cancer or oral cancer is fairly high for people who indulge in excessive smoking or drinking, or older men who are more than 50 years of age.
Tongue cancer can either occur on the front part of the tongue or at the base of the tongue, close to where the tongue is attached to the bottom of the mouth. When tongue cancer affects the front part of the tongue, it is called Oral tongue cancer and when it affects the base of the tongue, it is called Oropharyngeal cancer.
Tongue cancer which occurs most commonly is called Squamous cellcarcinoma. This cancer affects those parts of the body which mark the presence of thin and flat squamous cells. These parts include the surface of the skin and the tongue the lining of the mouth, throat, nose, thyroid, and larynx; and the lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts.
The exact cause of the occurrence of tongue cancer is not known. However, it is believed that some of the most apparent triggers of this cancer are: family history of the disease, chewing tobacco/betel, smoking, alcohol consumption, improper diet, contracting a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, poor oral hygiene, and past cases of squamous cell cancers. Moreover, some other known risk factors of tongue cancer include Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), and exposure to sulphuric acid, asbestos, formaldehyde, and certain other chemicals.
