Overview
Spermatocele or Spermatic Cyst is a fluid filled sack that grows in the epididymis (along, tightly coiled tube near the upper testicle that collects and transport sperms). It may also be called Epididymal Cyst as the cyst is formed in the Epididymis.
Spermatocele is mostly painless but may cause some pain if they grow too large. They can be of different sizes. They are smooth and filled with whitish liquid. It may feel like a firm lump in the scrotum on top of the testicle. They are benign or non-cancerous and may hold sperms that are no longer alive.
A Spermatocele does not affect a man's fertility but may reduce the quality or quantity of sperm produced if the Spermatocele is large. It is not a serious medical issue. They don't increase the risk of Testicular Cancer but they might get uncomfortable if the cyst grows too large.
Cause of Spermatocele
The real cause of Spermatocele is unknown. It could be caused by the obstruction or blockage of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. Faults in the male reproductive tract can cause a mass to grow near the top and behind the testicles. They are very common especially in males between 20 to 50 years of age. These cysts rarely develop in bodies before they attain teenage.
Symptoms of Spermatocele
Men with Spermatoceles do not complain of any symptoms except the feeling of heaviness or dull pain in the scrotum or feeling of fullness in the testicle. Spermatoceles cannot be seen during a visual exam but can be felt as a lump.
Diagnosis of Spermatocele
A detailed examination of the genital area helps in diagnosis of Spermatocele. The doctor needs to feel the testicles to search for lump that are painful to touch. Tests like Transillumination, Ultrasound may also be done to confirm the cyst.

Useful Tips
A balanced diet which has less fat content surely helps in treating Spermatocele.A diet that included more alkalizing foods and less acidic foods helps in reducing inflammations.Tropical applications of iodine, magnesium and chromium chloride may also be used to treat Spermatocele. A diet rich in iodine goes a long way in preventing and treating Spermatocele as cyst usually develops due to deficiency of iodine.
Although Spermatocele won`t go away on its own, in most cases no treatment is needed. Regular self examination is very important to check the size of the lump. There are no ways to prevent Spermatocele.
A procedure called Aspiration, in which the doctor inserts a needle into the cyst to remove the fluid, is done to relieve pain and pressure of Spermatoceles. Another procedure is Sclero Therapy to drain the fluid. This procedure might damage the Epididymis. Spermatocele is a condition that might recur even after surgery is performed. Regular checkups and follow ups are needed.
