Costochondritis is known as Chest pain or costo-sternal syndrome. It is also known as chest pain because its symptoms resemble the chest pain. If the swelling is accompanied by pain, it is known as Tietze syndrome.

It is characterised by the inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum (breast bone). The pain caused by costochondritis sometimes mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.

It usually goes away on its own but it may last for several weeks or even for the longer duration.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF COSTOCHONDRITIS?

  • Physical strains like heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, severe coughing might cause costochondritis.
  • Injury such as blow to the chest.
  • Certain infections such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis
  • Non-cancerous and various tumours can also cause costochondritis. It might travel to the joint from another type of the body such as breast, thyroid or lungs.

Various infections such as viruses, bacteria or fungi such as tuberculosis, syphilis can infect the rib joint.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COSTOCHONDRITIS?

The pain associated with costochondritis usually have the symptoms like:

  • Occurs usually on the left side of the breastbone.
  • Affects more than one rib.
  • Worsens while taking a deep breath or during coughing.
  • Usually sharp, aching or pressure like pain.

Patients with costochondritis who have the history of trauma need to be investigated to rule out the fracture of the ribs. In such situations, it is important to rule out the injury related to internal organs such as lungs. Once this possibility is ruled out, treatment through oral medications to bring out the faster healing of the fracture usually suffices.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

It can be diagnosed by physical examination. The doctor will feel the areas of tenderness or swelling along the breastbone.

The pain of costochondritis can be similar to the pain associated with the heart disease, lung disease or gastrointestinal problems.

There is no laboratory or imaging test available to confirm the diagnosis of costochondritis.

TREATMENT

It usually goes away on its own. Treatment generally focuses on pain relief. Various medications such as Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, narcotics, anti-depressants, anti-seizure drugs are prescribed but these medicines various side effects such as damage to the stomach lining as well as kidneys, habit forming etc.

1. Boswellia-Curcumin Capsules
