Glioma is a type of tumor occurs in the brain and spinal cord. It grows from glial cells. The function of glial cells is to supports nerve cells with energy and nutrients and helps to maintain the blood-brain barrier.
Tumors can develop in any part of the brain either its nerves or covering tissues.

Primary brain tumors are tumors which starts in the brain.
Secondary brain tumors are those which originate in another part of the body and then spread in the brain.

Types of glial cells, each with different functions are:
- Astrocyte – Its function is to transports nutrients and holds neurons in place.
- Oligodendrocyte – Its function is to provide insulation (myelin) to neurons.
- Microglia – It engulfs dead neurons and pathogens.
- Ependymal Cells – It lines the ventricular system and secretes cerebrospinal fluid.
TYPES OF GLIOMA INCLUDE
- Astrocytoma- It includes astrocytoma, anaplastic astrocytoma, and glioblastoma. These start in brain cells called astrocytes. Most of these brain tumors cannot be cured as they spread to normal blood tissues.
- Ependymomas- It includes anaplastic ependymoma, myxopapillary ependymoma and subependymoma. It makes less than 2%of all brain tumors and less than 10% of all brain tumors in children. These tumors arise from ependymal cells and as they do not spread to other brain cells, it can easily be cured with surgery.
- Oligodendrogliomas- It includes oligodendroglioma, anaplastic oligodendroglioma, and anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. It spreads like astrocytoma. As they spread slowly sometimes these tumors can be cured.
SYMPTOMS
Common signs and symptoms of gliomas include:
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Confusion or a decline in brain function
- Memory loss
- Personality changes or irritability
- Difficulty with balance
- Urinary incontinence

GRADING
- Grade 1 includes pilocystic astrocytoma and is more common in children. These tumor grows slowly and can be removed by surgery.
- Grade 2 are diffuse astrocytoma and are low grade.
- Grade 3 gliomas are diffuse and called anaplastic astrocytoma. They are considered high grade.
- Grade 4 is glioblastoma are considered as high grade. These are fast growing, aggressive and difficult to treat.
