Vitiligo (Leucoderma) Treatment in Ayurveda - Symptoms & Causes

ABOUT VITILIGO (LEUCODERMA)

vitiligo, leucoderma

Vitiligo (Leucoderma) is a skin-pigmentation disorder which characteristically leads to the appearance of white patches on the skin, on different body parts.

The occurrence of Vitiligo (Leucoderma) is linked to the degeneration of 'melanocytes' --- that is, cells which are responsible for making the 'melanin' pigment which gives the skin its colour. As a result of the degeneration of melanocytes, the skin of the affected people loses its colour, and white patches get formed on the skin.

In patients affected by Vitiligo, white patches appear on the skin in different parts of the body, and the hair growing on the affected areas also sometimes turns white. The first signs of the discoloration of the skin generally show up on those areas which are normally exposed to the sun, including face, lips, hands, arms, and feet.

Other than affecting the skin and hair, Vitiligo can also affect the retina (inner layer of the eyeball) and the mucous membranes (tissues which line the inside of the mouth and nose).

SYMPTOMS OF VITILIGO (LEUCODERMA)

The common symptoms of Vitiligo are:

  • Skin discoloration or appearance of white patches on skin.
  • Premature graying/whitening of the hair on the scalp, beard, eyebrows or eyelashes.
  • Loss of or change of color of the retina.
  • Loss of or change of color of the mucous membranes.

Vitiligo may affect people of any age or skin colour, but it mostly affects young people less than 20 years of age.

CAUSES OF VITILIGO (LEUCODERMA)

The occurrence of Vitiligo is linked to certain causes, which may include hereditary factors, or some auto-immune and inflammatory disorders, mostly including Thyroid, Psoriasis, Diabetes, and Pernicious Anemia.

From the viewpoint of Ayurveda, Vitiligo occurs due to 'Virudh aahar sevan' (eating foods items that are incompatible or opposite in nature) which triggers auto-immune disorders. As a result, toxins are formed inside the body, and the immune system gets disturbed; thereby leading to the occurrence of Vitiligo due to the degeneration of the pigment-producing melanocytes.

Ayurvedic experts also believe that Vitiligo may occur because of suppression of vomiting, consumption of sour-salty and fermented food items, aggravation of the body's Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas, particularly the Pitta dosha.

TREATMENT OF VITILIGO (LEUCODERMA)

The treatment of Vitiligo is generally aimed at restoring color to the affected, discoloured skin. However, in some cases, the treatment may be ineffective and the discoloured patches on the skin may be a long-term or life-long condition. Moreover, the treatment for the disorder may also not prevent continued loss of skin color or a recurrence of the condition.

Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company offers some excellent formulations which can be beneficial in managing Vitiligo. The products are prepared from 100% pure and natural herbs, under the guidance of renowned Ayurveda practitioners. The herbal products useful in managing Vitiligo include:
