Honeymoon Cystitis is a urinary tract infection that is caused by sexual intercourse. Urinary tract infections affect nearly 30% of women during honeymoon during their first sexual intercourse. Honeymoon related UTIs are common in females after their first intercourse.

It can also affect men but the percentage of occurrence is less than that in females.

The bacterium responsible for causing honeymoon cystitis is E.coli. uncomplicated cystitis. Other bacteria responsible for causing honeymoon cystitis are: Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella, Enterococci and Proteus.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HONEYMOON CYSTITIS?

Most cases of honeymoon cystitis are caused by the bacteria E.coli that affects a woman through sexual intercourse.

E.coli bladder infections can occur due to bad hygienic habits.

If bacteria infect the urethra, it leads to the condition known as honeymoon cystitis.

Some women are less prone this disorder due to their strong immune system while other women can get infection while having sexual intercourse. The wear and tear of the skin, especially after first intercourse increases the risk of this disease.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HONEYMOON CYSTITIS?

  • Burning sensation or pain during urination.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

There is a differential diagnosis of this disorder which includes ensuring the absence of other similar conditions such as:

  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Chlamydia
  • Candiadiasis
  • Pyelonephritis

Various antibiotics are prescribed. According to modern treatment, this condition is generally treated by antibiotics. The dosage of the specific drug can vary depending upon the severity of the symptoms as well as the medical history of the patient.

Analgesic is also prescribed.

2. Chandraprabha Vati
