Giardiasis (Giardia lamblia) is a parasite responsible for causing infection of the small intestine. It is one of the most common cause of parasitic gastrointestinal disease.
Giardia lamblia exists in two forms, an active form called a trophozoite and an inactive form is known as cyst. The active trophozoite gets attached to the lining of the small intestine and is responsible for causing signs and symptoms of giardiasis.
Giardiasis is not an infectious disease as the trophozoite cannot live outside the body therefore it cannot spread infection to others. On the other hand, the active cyst can exist for prolonged periods outside the body.
Cysts of Giardia are present in the faeces of an infected person. Thus, the infection is spread from one person to another by contamination.
When it is ingested by contaminated food or water, the acid present in stomach activates the cyst and the cyst develops into the disease causing trophozoite. It takes ingestion of only 10 cysts to cause an infection.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF GIARDIASIS?
The most common symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
Others symptoms of Giardiasis are:
- Bloating
- Malaise
- Nausea followed by vomiting or without vomiting
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Malabsorption
- Weight loss
The symptoms may begin for at least 7 days following infection but can occur as long as 3 or more weeks later.
In many patients who are not treated, infection may last for several months to years.
The symptoms may continue because of the condition referred to as post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GIARDIASIS?
The cause of the continuing symptoms is not clear but it may due to the bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine.
According to Ayurveda, the cause of parasitic infections is the weak digestive fire (agni). Impaired digestion is the major factor for creating the favourable conditions for parasites entering and reproducing in the body. People having healthy Pitta dosha can burn up parasites before these parasites cause harm to them. Thus, balanced Pitta (digestive fire) is necessary to keep the infections at bay. Parasites mainly affects those people who have imbalanced Vata and Kapha doshas in the body.
Once a parasite takes up residence in the intestine, it leeches essential nutrients required by the body and creates such a condition that becomes a breeding ground for the bacteria, fungi and yeast.
TREATMENT
Modern medicine includes the prescription of antibiotics such as metronidazole, furazolidone, albendazole etc. These antibiotics have certain side effects such as nausea and metallic taste in the mouth.
