ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: OVERVIEW
Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition which is commonly characterized by an irregular or fluttering heartbeat (arrhythmia). The condition typically leads to a poor flow of blood in the body.
Atrial fibrillation can cause formation of blood clots in the heart, due to poor blood flow. The blood clots formed in the heart can potentially move to other organs of the body, thereby resulting in blockages in the flow of blood (ischemia). Besides leading to formation of blood clots, Atrial fibrillation can also be a causative factor behind some other heart-linked complications, such as heart failure or stroke.
In some people affected by Atrial fibrillation, episodes of quivering or racing heart rate may occur and subside occasionally; while in other people, heartbeat irregularities may develop as a persistent, recurring condition which does not go away, and may require medical treatment.
Based on how occasionally Atrial fibrillation occurs and how long it persists, this condition can be classified into four categories --- Occasional, Persistent, Long-standing persistent, and Permanent.
The risk of occurrence of Atrial fibrillation apparently increases with age --- that is, the risk of the condition gets higher as a person becomes older in age.
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: CAUSES
The most common cause behind the occurrence of Atrial fibrillation is heart-related abnormalities or damage to the structure of the heart. In addition to this, some of the other common causes of Atrial fibrillation are:
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure
- Heart-valve abnormality
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart surgery in the past
- Congenital heart defects (abnormalities present at birth)
- Overactivity of the thyroid gland
- Metabolic imbalances
- Lung disorders
- Sleep apnea
- Viral infections
- Stress resulting from certain illnesses -- like pneumonia -- or surgery.
There are some factors which can put an individual at a potential risk of developing Atrial fibrillation. These factors include: Heart disease, high blood pressure, consumption of alcohol, obesity, family history of the condition, and certain chronic disorders like chronic kidney disease, lung disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: SYMPTOMS
An irregular or quivering heartbeat and pain/pressure in the chest are the most common indications of the occurrence of Atrial fibrillation. Along with these signs, there are also some other symptoms of this condition, including:
- Palpitations (sensations of racing heartbeat or uncomfortable throbbing in the chest)
- Shortness of breath
- Mental confusion
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Unconsciousness
- Sweating
- Chest pain
- Light-headedness.
Some people suffering from Atrial fibrillation may not have any overt symptoms of the condition; and, in some cases, certain symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath may be similar to the symptoms of a heart attack.
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: TREATMENT
The treatment of Atrial fibrillation generally include drugs/medications, electrical shock (cardio version), pacemakers, and minimally invasive surgery (ablation). By suggesting the use of medications and other interventions to the patients suffering from Atrial fibrillation, doctors basically try to rework the electrical system of the heart. Though Atrial fibrillation is usually not a life-threatening by itself, it is a serious medical problem which may sometimes need emergency treatment.
