THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA (TTP): OVERVIEW
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, serious blood disorder which is characterized by a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), and involves the tendency of the blood to clot.
In this disorder of the blood-coagulation system, tiny microscopic clots called ‘thrombi’ are formed extensively in the body’s small blood vessels. The formation of ‘thrombi’ throughout the body results in the consumption of platelets and, consequently, a lower platelet count. The condition, thus, affects the ability of the blood to clot when required -- such as in the case of an injury -- and causes excessive bleeding.
Besides lowering the platelet count severely, Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura can also cause an abnormal destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), as well as disturbances in the nervous system and other organs due to ‘thrombi’ formation in the smallest blood vessels.
In people affected by Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, the formation of ‘thrombi’ in the body can adversely affect the normal flow of blood; and can cause damage to several organs of the body, including the heart, the kidneys, the brain, and the nervous system.
CAUSES OF THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA
The exact cause of the occurrence of Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is not known, though the disorder is generally linked to the deficiency of enzyme ADAMTS13 which plays a role in blood clotting. Due to the deficiency, substantial complexes of the ‘von Willebrand factor’ clotting protein start circulating in the blood of the affected individuals, leading to the clotting of platelets and the destruction of red blood cells.
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is believed to have an acquired form and a familial form. The acquired form of TTP is a non-inherited form of the disorder which involves an autoimmune reaction, and may occur in late childhood or adulthood. The familial form of TTP marks the occurrence of the disorder at birth, with its indications usually appearing in infancy or early childhood.
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura may occur as a result of AIDS, or the HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection.
SYMPTOMS OF THROMBOTIC THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA
There are commonly five main symptoms marking a classical presentation of TTP. These five symptoms are:
- Fever
- Mental-status changes
- Improper functioning of kidneys
- Thrombocytopenia
- Haemolytic anaemia (microangiopathic hemolytic anemia).
In addition, there are some other indications of the disorder as well. These indications include:
- Formation of purplish bruises (purpura) on skin or mucous membranes
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Jaundice
- Hypertension (High blood pressure)
- Low amount of urine, or protein/blood in urine.
