Ayurvedic Treatment for Oral Herpes - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Herbal Remedies

Oral Herpes is a viral infection which is characterized by the occurrence of sores in and around the mouth, particularly the border of the lips. This infection -- commonly referred to as ‘cold sores’ -- is caused by a DNA virus called the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The occurrence of sores typically distinguishes Oral Herpes from other conditions such as Oral thrush, shingles, syphilis, and gonorrhoea.

Oral Herpes viral infection is also known by some other names like HSV-1, Type 1 herpes simplex virus, or Herpes labialis. The infection mainly spreads through close personal contact, like kissing. In addition, since the herpes simplex virus is highly contagious, the infection can also be contracted by touching infected saliva, skin, or mucous membranes.

In people affected by Oral Herpes, small, painful sores (or fluid-filled lesions) appear on the lips, tongue, gums, throat, inside part of the cheeks or the nose, and the roof of the mouth. Sometimes, the infection may also lead to the occurrence of sores on the face, chin, and neck; and may also rarely cause genital lesions.

The sores which mark the occurrence of Oral Herpes generally disappear completely in a couple of weeks, without causing any scarring on the affected area. However, the infection may sometimes recur and the sores may reappear, especially due to certain physical and emotional stresses which are termed as ‘triggers’. These triggers can include fever, fatigue, illness, ultraviolet light, hormonal changes, immune depression, and straining of a site or a nerve region where the infection had previously occurred.

Some of the most common symptoms of Oral Herpes viral infection are fever, swelling of lymph nodes, and muscle aches. The appearance of sores in and around the mouth in this infection is generally preceded by pain, soreness of lips, itching, tingling, or burning sensation at the infection site.

DIAGNOSIS OF ORAL HERPES

Oral Herpes is usually a self-diagnosable condition; but, in some cases, the diagnosis of the infection by a doctor may require lab tests or imaging. Specifically, the definitive diagnosis of Oral Herpes may require the affected person to undergo the following tests:

  • Identification of HSV from a sample (tissue or fluid) taken from the sores
  • A viral culture analysis
  • Antigen and antibody studies
  • The ‘Tzanck smear’ staining test (to ascertain nonspecific cell nucleus changes due to HSV).

TREATMENT OF ORAL HERPES

Mild infection caused by HSV in Oral Herpes generally does not need any treatment, while severe infection needs to be treated with an antiviral agent or oral antiviral drugs. Mostly doctors prescribe medications for controlling fever to people suffering from Oral Herpes, and also advise them to take lots of fluids. In addition, doctors may also prescribe the use of a topical anaesthetic to the patients so that they can get relief from the pain related to oral sores and lesions.
