Ayurvedic Treatment for Cervical Lymph Nodes - Categories, Symptoms, Causes & Herbal Remedies

CERVICAL LYMPH NODES: OVERVIEW

Cervical lymph nodes are the lymph nodes -- or small glands -- which are located in the neck region. These lymph nodes, nearly 300 in number, are an important part of the lymphatic system which a component of the human immune system.

The lymphatic system comprises nodes and vessels -- called lymphoid tissues -- which are located at different parts of the body. There are a total of around 800 lymph nodes in the body. These lymph nodes basically filter the lymph, that is, the clear fluid which circulates through the lymphatic system.

The nodes and vessels comprising the lymphatic system are basically responsible for offering protection to the body against infections. For this purpose, the lymphatic system delivers ‘lymphocytesor immune cells to those parts of the body where the immune response has been triggered.

Cervical lymph nodes found in the neck are subject to several pathological conditions including inflammation, infections, tumours and immune disorders.

GENERAL CATEGORIES OF CERVICAL LYMPH NODES

Generally, cervical lymph nodes can be categorized into two groups: Anterior cervical lymph nodes and Posterior cervical lymph nodes.

The Anterior cervical lymph nodes are located under the chin (submental nodes) and the jawline (submaxillary or tonsillar nodes), while the Posterior cervical lymph nodes are located along the back of the neck.

On the basis of the position of Anterior cervical lymph nodes near the structures of the throat, the nodes which are located further down the front of the neck are divided into four categories --- Prelaryngeal lymph nodes (located in front of the larynx or voice box); Thyroid lymph nodes (located close to the thyroid gland); Pretracheal lymph nodes (located in front of the trachea or windpipe); and Paratracheal lymph nodes (located near the sides of the trachea).

Furthermore, the Cervical lymph nodes which are located next to the internal jugular vein that runs near the sides of the neck are Deep cervical lymph nodes, and are categorised as lateral jugular, anterior jugular, and jugulo-digastric lymph nodes.

REASONS FOR SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES

Swelling of the lymph nodes is a fairly common condition which usually is caused by exposure to bacteria or viruses; for example, those which cause the common cold. However, in some rare cases, swollen lymph nodes can be an indication of a serious health condition.

The main reasons for the swelling of lymph nodes are illness, stress, or infection. Some of the illnesses or infections which can potentially lead to swollen lymph nodes in the neck and head include:

  • Common cold or flu
  • Ear infection
  • Tooth infection

  • HIV infection
  • Mononucleosis (mono)
