Ayurvedic Treatment for DPN Disease (Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra)

DERMATOSIS PAPULOSA NIGRA: OVERVIEW

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a skin condition characterized by the occurrence of small, benign lesions on the face -- especially around the cheekbone, forehead and under the eyes -- and also on the neck, chest, and back. These lesions are also sometimes known as ‘flesh moles,’ even though they are not actually moles.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra mostly affects dark-skinned people rather than fair-skinned ones. Particularly, these benign lesions appear in Blacks and dark-skinned; and are more likely to occur in females as compared to males. These lesions usually appear in teenage years; and their size and number increases with age, thereby worsening the condition. The size of these spots is generally between 1mm and 5mm.

The small skin lesions which mark the occurrence of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra usually look like black or brown spots (or papules) which are either flat in appearance or hang off the skin like skin tags. Some people affected by this condition have a few, isolated black/brown spots, while others have hundreds of spots on certain parts of the skin.

If a person affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra has less than 10 papules on the skin, the condition is considered ‘Mild;’ if the number of papules is between 10 and 50, the condition is considered ‘Moderate; and if the number of papules is more than 50, the condition is considered ‘Severe.’

The exact cause of the occurrence of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is not known. However, it is believed that the condition occurs either due to the improper development of the pilosebaceous follicle or it is associated with a genetic predisposition. According to research, nearly 50 percent of the people affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra have a family history of the condition.

TREATMENT OF DERMATOSIS PAPULOSA NIGRA

The skin lesions which appear in people affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are non-cancerous growths which are not a cause of concern from the medical perspective. However, these lesions are cosmetically undesired, and they may sometimes cause itchiness or irritation. As such, some patients may choose to have these lesions removed.

The common treatment options for Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are: shave excision, scissor excision, dermabrasion, laser removal, curettage, cryosurgery, and electrodessication. These treatment options may lead to some potential complications like scarring of the skin, postoperative skin discoloration or keloid formation.
