Acute medullary infarct is a rare condition in which an infarction or stroke occurs in the lateral medulla which is a part of the brain stem. It results when the oxygenated blood doesn't get to this part of the brain when the arteries that lead to it are blocked. The cause of medullary infarct is not clear. It is a neurological condition caused by the blockage of the vertebral artery or posterior inferior cerebellar artery. It is the clinical manifestation resulting from occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) in which the lateral part of the medulla oblongata infarcts. The most commonly affected artery is the vertebral artery followed by PICA, superior middle and inferior medullary arteries.
The brain stem is in charge of delivering messages to the spinal cord for motor and sensory functions. A stroke in this area causes problems with how the person's muscles function and the sensations are perceived.
The outlook for acute medullary infarct depends on the size and location of the area of the brain that is damaged by the stroke. Some individuals may see a decrease in their symptoms within few weeks or months.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE MEDULLARY INFARCT?
The most common symptom of acute medullary infarct is dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing. Other symptoms include:

Some researchers have found that persons with heart disease, blood clots, minor neck trauma from rotational activities are at the risk of acute medullary infarct.
TREATMENT
According to modern medicine, there is no treatment of acute medullary infarct. Doctors will probably focus treatment on relieving or eliminating the symptoms like prescribing speech therapists for learning swallowing therapy that helps the patients to swallow again. Medicines for reducing pain are also prescribed. Blood thinners like heparin or warfarin are also prescribed which help in preventing further clots.
According to Ayurveda, acute medullary infarct can occur due to the vitiation of Vata dosha which gets lodged in the corresponding nerves. When Vata gets aggravated, it dries up the tendons making the organ or parts of that side incapable of functioning and loss of sensation.
