Ayurvedic Treatment of Hepatic Steatosis

The word Hepatic means "liver" and Steatosis means "infiltration of liver cells with fat". Liver is consider as the second largest organ in the body. The normal liver weighs 1.4 to 1.5kg in males and 1.2 to 1.4kg in females. Size of liver in males is 10.5cm and in females is 7cm but, when its size increase 5 to 10 percent of normal, it leads to Hepatic Steatosis.

Hepatic Steatosis

If too much fats accumulate in the liver, it lead to a condition known as "Hepatic Steatosis". The condition is also termed as fatty liver. Hepatic Steatosis occur when there is accumulation of fatty acids in the form of triglycerides in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes.

1) Alcoholic Steatosis:

Among this you can have more chance of Alcoholic Steatosis if you are obese, consuming more iron in body and suffering from Hepatitis C. If a person is chronic alcoholic, it produces toxic metabolites that cause hepatic steatosis.

2) Non-Alcoholic Steatosis:

The reason behind this condition may be due to genetic factor, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, malnutrition, viral hepatitis, weight loss, medications or bacteria in small intestines. In late pregnancy hepatic steatosis may occur in some case.

HOW IS HEPATIC STEATOSIS DIAGNOSED?

Hepatic Steatosis is diagnosed by various tests mentioned below:

  1. A routine blood test: When the liver enzymes are higher than its normal range can be a reason for hepatic steatosis.
  2. Physical check-up: If liver is enlarged or inflamed it can be detected by examining abdomen of the affected person. Affected person may experience loss of appetite or fatigue.
  3. Ultrasound, CT scan and MRI: These imaging scan can detect fat in liver.
  4. Biopsy: Liver biopsy is another option to found hepatic steatosis.

AYURVEDIC POINT OF VIEW ON HEPATIC STEATOSIS

Ayurveda helps to rule out any disease on "Tridosha's" theory. These three dosha are commonly known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha that move throughout our body via blood media. Liver is known by "Yakrit" in ayurveda. When the Pitta get imbalanced in liver cells, it leads to accumulation of kapha in the liver. Kapha dosha cause free fats to get stick to the liver and cause channel blocks that lead hepatic steatosis.
