Incidence of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is increasing now-a-days because of sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of junk food, pollution, etc. The word “Syndrome” is used to describe PCOS because it is a complex manifestation involving many factors and organs such as—obesity, irregular menstrual bleeding, abnormal menstrual periods, insulin resistance, lack of ovum production etc. It causes worry as it is commonly found in reproductive age and it is thought to be one of the leading causes of female infertility. It is diagnosed in women when they are seeking medical advice for infertility as well as irregular menstrual bleeding, majority of these cases are treated by hormonal therapy or surgical intervention but PCOS can be taken care by Ayurvedic treatment, diet and home remedies.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition where hormonal imbalance affects the follicular growth during the ovarian cycle causing the affected follicles to remain in the ovary. The retained follicle forms a cyst and with each ovarian cycle, a new cyst is formed leading to multiple ovarian cysts.

The ovarian cycle is governed by a hormonal feedback system moderated by the hypothalamus, thus it requires constant feedback of hormones to properly regulate the release of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Lutenizing Hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary gland. The hormonal feedback that the hypothalamus receives is due to the high levels of oestrogen that has been formed from free androgens in the peripheral tissue.

ORGANS INVOLVED IN POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

  1. Ovary - The female gonad organ present at either sides of the uterus.
  2. Adrenal glands - These are present just above both the kidneys.
  3. Pancreas - It is a gland which produces insulin in the body.
  4. Pituitary Gland - It is a gland present just below the brain responsible for hormonal control.

PCOS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

Ayurveda suggests that PCOS is a disorder involving Pitta, Kapha Vata (Apana Vayu), Medas and Artav dhatu. Mainly gynaecological disorders are due to the imbalance of Vata dosha. The causes of PCOS according to Ayurveda are eating heavy foods that increase Kapha doshas in the body like - consumption of sweet, heavy foods, low digestion strength. Pushpagani Rewati mentioned by Master Kashyap in Ayurvedic texts bears some similarity with the symptoms of PCOS. When the deranged Vata vitiates the mamsa, shonita and meda mixed up with Kapha, they produce circular, raised and knotted inflammatory swelling called "Granthi". This type of glandular swelling is compared with the modern terminology known as - cyst which is an abnormal closed epithelium-lined cavity containing liquid or semi-solid material.

The biggest contributor of PCOS is the poor diet. Young women with PCOS tend to eat too much sugar or carbonized drinks and highly refined carbohydrates which causes unhealthy rise in insulin levels. This type of diet causes obesity thus aggravating PCOS. Women who are stressed tend to eat more food that are high in fat, carbohydrates and sugar in response to stress. Thus, it can be concluded that the modern stressful lifestyle and food habits are contribute in the development of PCOS. Ayurvedic treatment involves applying a multi-pronged approach towards correcting the hormonal imbalance, treatment to insulin resistance and treatment of obesity and avoiding high cholesterol levels.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME?

  1. The principal signs and symptoms of PCOS are - menstrual disturbance and elevated levels of male hormones known as - androgens. Thus, women complain of hair on face, acne, alopecia.
  2. Obesity
  3. Infertility due to improper ovulation
  4. Absence of menstruation/ scanty menstrual bleeding / abnormally high and irregular bleeding.
  5. Dark coloured band like skin lesion may be developed at the back of the neck, inner thighs and axilla known as acanthosis nigricans.
  6. Bilateral enlarged cystic ovaries are revealed when examined internally.
