Keratoconus literally means "cone-shaped cornea, is not so common condition which that happens when normally round, dome-like cornea becomes thin and gradually develops a cone-like bulge, that causes blurred vision and may cause sensitivity to light and glare. Keratoconus usually affects both eyes and generally begins to first affect people ages 10 to 25. The condition may progress slowly for 10 years or longer.
Keratoconus initially might develop in one eye only, but usually affects both eyes with one eye being more severely affected than the other. Both males and females are equally affected.

CAUSES OF KERATOCONUS
Etiology of keratoconus is still unknown.
- It is considered to be an inherited condition, holding a family history.
- Forceful rubbing of eyes results in injury to eye raises the risks of developing keratoconus.
- May be associated with certain conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa, Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
- Also related to certain allergies such as eczema, hay fever and asthma etc.
- Repeated exposure to UV rays and continuous eye irritation.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF KERATOCONUS
There might be alteration in the signs and symptoms of keratoconus as the disease progresses. Keratoconus generally affects both eyes, however symptoms in either eye may differ.

- Early symptom of keratoconus includes development of uneven shaped cornea, appearing as a ‘bulge’ advancing from the eye socket.
- Blurred or distorted vision.
- Poor night vision.
- Results in increased eye pain, headache or strain to eye.
- Sensitivity to bright light, sunlight and glare increases.
- Regular need to changes in eyeglass prescriptions.
- Sudden fading or clouding of vision.

1. Punarnava Mandoor
