When the normal activities of a person are restricted then it causes hindrances in leading a normal life. This restriction is caused when there is occurrence of nervous disorder. Movements are a way of expressing our feelings, work etc. and they're monitored by the brain and nerves.
The nervous system is further categorized under two types
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
The Peripheral Nervous System consists of the nerves which form a network with the entire body excluding brain. It has further 2 sub divisions, sensory division that collects the impulses from body and send to brain and motor division who does the opposite from the sensory division.
WHAT IS NEUROPATHY?
Neuropathy is a term which is used to classify nerve ailments. It can either be sensory or motor. If neuropathy hits both systems then it is known as Sensory Motor neuropathy.
Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy or HMSN or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
It is a cluster of inherited conditions that cause damage to the peripheral nerves. HMSN was of two types earlier but It was again classified into 7 types:
- TYPE ONE: It is distinguished by slow nerve conduction velocities and demyelinating neuropathy.
- TYPE TWO: It is distinguished by normal nerve conduction velocities and degeneration of axons.
- TYPE THREE: It begins in infancy and causes detained motor skills. This type is quite severe than the former two.
- TYPE FOUR: This causes muscle weakness and atrophy like other types but it is differentiated for being of autosomal recessive inheritance.
- TYPE FIVE: It begins between 5 to 12 years. Apart from muscle weakness and muscle atrophy, visual and hearing impairment is also associated.
- TYPE SIX: It begins early with the same symptoms followed by optic atrophy which results in complete or partial loss of vision.
- TYPE SEVEN: It starts late with muscular weakness and atrophy commonly in the lower extremities.
SYMPTOMS
- Pain
- Fatigue
- Lack of balance
- Absence of reflexes
- Loss of vision and hearing
- Lack of feelings
- Foot deformities
- Scoliosis
DIAGNOSIS
Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies are diagnosed through a physical evaluation that focuses on muscle atrophy, weakness, and sensory responses. Apart from this, EMG (electromyography) and motor nerve conduction tests can help in figuring out the type of motor and sensory neuropathy along with the severity of the disease. The disease is finally confirmed through genetic testing.
TREATMENT
A proper treatment for hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies is not yet found. Walking, physiotherapies, stretching exercises can be helpful.
AYURVEDIC POINT OF VIEW
Ayurveda is the oldest and safest holistic healing system. It aids in getting rid of the disease from its origin and it has no side effects. Ayurveda theory explains that everything in the universe -living or not is connected. Good health is attained when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. Everyone is made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
Ayurveda is based on three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha which if vitiated give rise to numerous diseases. Ayurvedic cure for hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies is very effective as the herbs are focused to heal the nervous system which as a result ameliorates the neuromuscular coordination.
