GOODPASTURE SYNDROME
The cases of this disease is one in 1 million. The occurrence rate of this disease is more in Caucasian race than in any other race and mainly higher in males than females. This affects especially two age groups: mid 30s and late 50s.
WHAT IS THIS GOODPASTURE SYNDROME?
- Goodpasture syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder. This arises when body own immunity system attacks healthy and friendly body tissues. It is known as pulmonary renal disorder, in which there is acute illness in the kidneys and lungs. This disease is featured with some conditions. These conditions are
- Pulmonary hemorrhage
- It involves acute bleeding from the lungs and alveoli sacs.
- Glomerulonephritis
- It involves inflammation in glomeruli. These are present as tinny clusters of blood vessels in the kidney, help to filter extra water and waste from the blood.
HISTORY BEHIND THE DISORDER NAME
Ernest Goodpasture, American pathologist and physician, explained the condition of this syndrome during the influenza pandemic in 1919. Ernest reported on patients who died from kidney failure and lungs bleeding. After the name of the scientist, disorder name is known as Goodpasture. It is sometimes known with the name of Anti-GBM (glomerular basement membrane) disease.
HOW THE DISEASE GENERATED?
In this syndrome, people are attacked by a kind of antibody. This antibody known as anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies. This antibody attacks a protein, known as collagen, present in the air sacs of the lungs and filtering units of kidney. These antibodies damage the membranes of kidney, which leads to kidney damage. These antibodies bind membrane epitopes and activate compliment cascade, lead tissue injury.
WHAT CAN CAUSE GOODPASTURE DISORDER?
The exact reasons for being this is not clear but this ailment can be caused through these conditions such as:
- Breathing in air contains hydrocarbons like carbon tetrachloride, ethyl ether, xylene and trichloroethane etc. this exposure can damage the basement membrane and expose antigen sites within the lungs, through which antibody can attack the membranes and cause pulmonary hemorrhage.
- Another reason is smoking and substances like cocaine, as these things also contain various toxic, harmful elements that can create this problem.
- Viral lung infections.
- Genetic.
WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS CAN ARISE DUE TO GOODPASTURE DISORDER?
The symptoms appear gradually. Later it affects lungs and kidneys and shows symptoms related to it.
Starting symptoms of Goodpasture disorder can be:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Unhealthy appearance
- Fatigue and weakness
If the lungs are involved and are getting damaged, then the symptoms can be:
- Difficulty in breathing
- Dry cough
- Coughing up blood
In the case of affected kidneys:
- Blood in urine or foamy urine
- Back pains

- High blood pressure
