WHAT ARE PILES OR HAEMORRHOIDS?

Piles (Haemorrhoids) are soft pads or cushions in the anal canal with blood vessels, supporting structures, muscle and elastic fibers. When these blood vessels become enlarged this leads to swelling in the anal region called piles. It is associated with painful stools and may be accompanied by bleeding.

It can occur at any age but it is more common in middle and old age.

It occur during pregnancy (postpartum hemorrhoids) also.

PILES - AN AYURVEDIC VIEW

Piles in Ayurveda known as Arsha. Defecation process occurs through Apana Vata according to Ayurveda. Weakening of Apana Vata leads to accumulation of waste products which causes Piles. Piles results due to reduced and improper digestion (mandagni) resulting in the accumulation of less digested food (Aam) and this disturbs doshas affecting ano-rectal area.

TYPES OF PILES

Internal Piles are more common. Located inside the anal canal and areusually painless and bleeding is the diagnostic factor. Sometimes internal piles may enlarge and protrude outside the anal sphincter.

It is divided into Grades:

Grade 1: They are just inside the anus and occasionally causes discomfort. Bleeding is the form of drops.

Grade 2: Pea sized swelling appear after passing the stools causing discomfort and retained after strain of defecation is stopped. Bleeding in the form of drops or splash.

Grade 3: Swollen blood vessels get more enlarged and hanging outside anus permanently. Piles mass have to be pushed inside with fingers. Soreness occurs. Occasional bleeding in the form of drops or splash.

External Pilesare less common. Occur outside the edge of the anal canal, covered by skin and can be felt easily. It is painful in nature. Blood clots sometimes in the external piles and cause extreme painful condition.

CAUSES FOR PILES

  • Persistent Constipation.
  • Sitting for long time.
  • Increased Straining during defecating.
  • Lack of fibers in the diet.
  • Eating spicy food.
  • Lack of Exercise in you daily routine
  • Hypertension and Stress.
  • Obesity can increase rectal vein pressure
  • Smoking can further worsen the condition.
  • Untreated conditions like diarrhea, colitisetc.

SYMPTOMS OF PILES

  • Bleeding from anus
  • Burning sensation, feeling of Itching
  • Swelling and pain in the anal region
  • Redness and Swelling in the anal region
  • Feeling of fullness in the anus
  • Mucus Discharge while passing out the stools
  • Anemia may occur due to bleeding

COMPLICATIONS OF PILES

Complications occur in case treatment is delayed.

  • Anal Fistula
  • Sepsis
  • Continuous pain
  • Scar formation

4. VARA CHURNA

Dose:- 1 teaspoonful twice daily with warm water after meal.

5. NIRGUNDI OIL

This herbal oil give effective results in piles by reducing pain, swelling & abscess conditions. Nirgundi oil contains herb like Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Kalihari (Gloriosa superba) & Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) mixed in Tila oil (Sesamum indicum) that shrink & shed off piles mass internally.

Usage:- For local application on the affected area.

6. SURAN VATAK

Suran vatak is a classical ayurvedic formulation prepared using The suran vatak has ingredients like Surana (Amorphophallus campanulatus), Dhatri (Emblica officinalis), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica), vidanga (Emblica ribes), Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), bhallataka (Semecarpus anacardium) etc. This formulation helps in reducing the inflammation and manages Piles as well. Along with this, it also acts as digestive and carminative.

Dose:- 2 tablets twice daily with warm water after meal.

OTHER TREATMENT FOR PILES

  • Increase physical activities. Exercise daily.
  • Increase fiber rich food including raw vegetables and fruits papaya, mango seeds, sesame seeds, bitter gourd, turnip, rice, wheat, radish, ginger and onion etc. in your diet.
  • Increase water and fluid intake including juices.
  • Avoid coffee, alcohol.
  • Avoid to lift heavy loads.
  • Avoid food which are not digested easily and spicy food.
  • Always maintain hygiene of anal area.
  • Avoid regular use of laxatives, as it can lead to habit and loses the natural ability to defecate.
  • Have enough sleep.
