Ayurvedic treatment for Elephantiasis

One cannot even imagine the horrible condition of people who are suffering from elephantiasis. Now question comes what is elephantiasis? How does it affect people? It is a mosquito borne parasitic disease which infects the people by a parasitic worm (Wuchereria bancrofti). This worm when released into human body it causes the blockage of lymphatic system which results in the swelling of legs and various other body parts. In a recent study it has been found that approximately 120 million people are affected by this disease and around 40 million people have severe condition. So don't take this lightly, because it has the severe health complications and can be life threatening.

With the use of herbs, the problem of ELEPHANTIASIS can be managed because herbs have healing properties and show the positive effects on body. However herbs take time to show effects on body but their results are long lasting without any side effects. These herbs Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Haridra(Curcuma longa) and Shallaki (Boswellia serrata) are very beneficial to manage the elephantiasis in a natural way.

WHAT IS ELEPHANTIASIS?

Elephantiasis (filariasis) is a parasitic disease which is caused by mosquito bite that carries parasitic worm (Wuchereria bancrofti). Infected mosquito bites a person, inject the worm larvae, microfilariae into blood stream. There microfilariae spread throughout blood stream where they may survive for many years and symptoms may not appear for many years even after infection. These worms restrict the circulation and block lymphatic system. Due to this blockage there is the swelling in legs, arms and genitals which makes the body parts appearance like an elephant.

SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH ELIPHANTIASIS?

  • In elephantiasis mostly swelling occur in legs, arms, genitals and chest.
  • Hardening and thickening of skin.

SYMPTOMS THAT LISTED BELOW MAY LEAD TO SEVERE CONDITION

  • Excess sweating.
  • Headache.
  • High fever.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Muscles pain.

COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ELEPHANTIASIS

If the elephantiasis left untreated it may lead to various health complications which are listed below -

  • Kidney damage.
  • Swelling of limbs.
  • Swelling of genital parts.
  • Sexual disability.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE ELEPHANTIASIS?

Diagnosis of elephantiasis is done by the presence of mircofilariae in blood. Because these microfilariae circulate in blood as they have the nocturnal activity. Pateints which have active filarial worms during infection, they have elevated levels of immunoglobulin IgG4 in the blood.

AYURVEDIC OUTLOOK

In ayurveda, Elephantiasis (Filariasis) is known as shlipada ("Shli means elephant and pada means foot). It is the disease in which foot looks like foot of elephant. It is a mosquito borne parasitic disease which infects the people by a parasitic worm, (Wuchereria bancrofti). This worm when released into human body it causes the blockage of lymphatic system (lasika). Elephantiasis mainly effects legs but also affects the arms, breast and genitals. In this skin of affected parts becomes like elephant.

There are three energies - vata, pitta and kapha in the body which are responsible to maintain a good health. Vitiation of any three energies results in health complications. Aggravation of three doshas, primarly kapha dosha occurs in elephantiasis which results in blockage of lasika (lymphatic system). Due to the blockage, swelling of legs and various other body parts occur which is characterized by fever, muscle ache and excess sweating etc.

From the ayurvedic perspective, with the use of herbs, the problem of elephantiasis can be managed because herbs have healing properties and encourage body to fight against foreign agents. However herbs take time to show effects on body but their results are long lasting without any side effects. These are herbs Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Haridra(Curcuma longa) and Shallaki (Boswellia serrata) which are very beneficial to manage the elephantiasis in a natural way.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Pyorrhea

Pyorrhea

PYORRHEA

The supporting structure of tooth consists of periodontal ligaments, gums and bones. Inflammation and infection of these tooth supporting structures leads to a dental disease called Pyorrhea. Further it can lead toothache, pus formation followed by shrinkage of the gum. Untreated Pyorrhea can results in bone loss which can cause loosening/mobile teeth and the eventual loss of teeth.

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF PYORRHEA

In Ayurvedic name for Pyorrhea is 'Putidanta or Dantaveshta'. From Ayurvedic perspectives, pyorrhea reflects vitiation of rasa and rakta dhatus.

CAUSES FOR PYORRHEA

Primary cause for pyorrhea is usually a result of increased accumulation of bacteria leading to dental plaque formation causing gingivitis, a periodontal disease that infects the gum through plaque, causing pocket formation between the teeth that trap plaque and food particles accumulated, bacteria in plaque produce many toxins, which irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed, tender and prone to bleeding easily. Bacterial activity is however, facilitated by the lowered vitality of the system.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PYORRHEA

  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • The sticking of food particles in between the teeth.
  • Deficiency of Vitamin C.
  • Chemical and physical irritants.
  • Improper use of toothpicks can lead to injury or damage to the gums and the structures supporting.
  • Use of contraceptive pills.
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol.
  • Use of certain drugs.
  • Allergies
  • Emotional Stress and excessive tension.
  • Pregnancy
  • Wrong eating habits like the frequent intake of white sugar and bread
  • Wrong technique of brushing.

AYURVEDIC CAUSE FOR PYORRHEA

In context of Ayurveda, pyorrhea results due to vitiation of rasa and rakta dhatus, caused by improper digestion. The toxins produced due to improper digestion get mixed up with these two dhatus and then get accumulated in gums and oral cavity. These come out during actions like brushing teeth. So pyorrhea in Ayurvedic terms is caused by poor digestion.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PYORRHEA

  1. Swollen, tender or red gums.
  2. Pus discharge may be there.
  3. Mouth ulcer formation may occur.
  4. Bone erosion occur.
  5. Bleeding from gums while brushing and/or flossing.
  6. Persistent bad breath.
  7. Feeling of loose teeth or like they're separating/drifting.
  8. Gums recede - gums that have pulled away from teeth.

DANGERS OF PYORRHEA

Pyorrhea can lead to increasing risk of numerous other adverse health effects. The advanced stage of pyorrhea puts those suffering from it at an even higher increased risk for things such as:

  • Risk of heart attack increase by as much as 25%
  • Risk of stroke increases by a factor of 10
  • Problems like both type I and type I diabetes
  • Respiratory disease
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Premature births
  • Newborns are underweight
  • Digestive disorders

WHAT IS GRANULOMATOUS MASTITIS (GM)?

It is rare chronic inflammatory condition of breast. In this condition the breast gets inflamed and develops a tissue mass. It is difficult to differentiate from breast cancer because it is similar to breast cancer. It may occur at any time but it is most common after 2-6 years of pregnancy. It may involve all parts of breast. It may present as distinct firm lump mostly in sub areolar region (area behind nipples) of breast.

GM is divided into two types - Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (Granular lobular mastitis) and Granulomatous mastitis.

SYMPTOMS OF GRANULOMATOUS MASTITIS

Common Sign and Symptoms of GM are given below:

  • Formation of lumps in breasts
  • Breast inflammation
  • Excretion of fluid from breasts
  • Pain in breasts
  • Retraction of the nipples
  • Enlargements of lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Warmth feeling in breast on touch.

CAUSES OF GRANULOMATOUS MASTITIS

The exact cause of GM is unknown. It is an autoimmune disease. Some of other causes may be:

  • Blockage of milk duct: If breast is not completely empty after feeding, it may block milk duct or become clogged that results in breast infection.
  • Bacterial infection: Sometimes a bacteria may enter milk duct of breast through baby’s mouth or through surface that results in infection.
  • Elevated prolactin level.

DIAGNOSIS OF GRANULOMATOUS MASTITIS

It is difficult to diagnose only on the basis of symptoms. Doctors diagnose GM on the basis of physical examination and some tests.

Physical examination - doctors diagnose symptoms such as fever, chills, pain and area around the nipples of breast.

TESTS

  • CT scan
  • X-Ray
  • Ultrasound
  • Core biopsy- it is main test to diagnose GM. In this a sample of tissue is taken from breast for analysis.

COMPLICATIONS

COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH GRANULOMATOUS MASTITIS

If it is left untreated then it may cause severe problems. If GM occurs due to blockage it may block the duct completely due to accumulation of pus (abscess) in that region and forms breast mass or lump and it requires surgery to remove it. To avoid such severe condition consult a doctor as soon as possible according to sign and symptoms.

Ayurveda Treatment for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Coronary Artery Disease is very common Heart disease that involves the impairment in the blood supply to the heart muscles via coronary arteries. It is due to thickening of the arteries because of plaque build up in the arteries (atherosclerosis). As a result, less supply of blood and oxygen goes to heart muscles which can lead to pain in the chest pain (Angina) or may cause Heart Attack.

It is also called as Coronary Heart Disease or Ischemic Heart Disease.

Ayurveda has designated heart as an origin of channel of rasa dhatu (which is first tissue out of seven recognized tissues). Digestion of food by gastric fire forms this rasa dhatu. Poor gastric fire, consumption of improper diet, mental stress etc. lead to production of toxins, vitiated rasa dhatu. Toxins (ama) from rasa dhatu go into the heart and create blockages in channels. Such blockages result in IHD.

SYMPTOMS OF CAD

Angina is the common symptom of CAD when artery is partially blocked, one feels pressure or tightness in the chest. May involve an aching, burning, or numb sensation and fullness or squeezing in your chest. Besides chest it may also be felt in the left shoulder, arms, neck, back or jaw.

Feeling of shortness of breath and sweating also accompanies.

Fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting are most common features.

Heart Attack occurs if complete blockage of coronary artery occurs.

CAUSES

WHAT CAUSES CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE?

  • Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of CAD. This results because of narrowing and hardening of the arteries due to accumulation of cholesterol, fats and other substances forming a sticky material called plaque on inner walls of the coronary arteries. This narrowing and hardening of arteries reduces the blood supply to the heart muscles which makes the heart to receive less oxygen and nutrients required for the working of heart muscles which may cause chest pain discomfort known as Angina.
  • Other causes include coronary spasm: coronary artery embolism, dissection, aneurysm, and vasculitis.

CAUSES OF CAD - AYURVEDIC VIEW

"HRIDROGA" combination of Word 'HRID' defines 'heart' and 'ROG' defines 'disease'. As stated by Ayurveda heart is evaluated as a main channel for rasa and rakta dhatu. Unhealthy food intake and sedentary life style causes blockage in the heart. The main power controlling everything in the body is vata dosha. Vikrati of meda dhatu, kapha dosha blocks the way of vata. Aggravation of vata dosha causes pain in heart and other symptoms like cough, fatigue, palpitations, loss of appetite etc.

RISK FACTORS

MAJOR RISK FACTORS ARE

  • Lack of exercise and Physical inactivity.
  • Obesity is also one of the reason.
  • Stress and tension are certain predisposing factors that develop atherosclerosis
  • High cholesterol level, (particularly the "bad" component known as Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL)
  • Certain systemic diseases increase the risk, like High blood pressure (Hypertension), Diabetes and Hyperthyroidism.
  • Smoking and tobacco enhance the risk of CAD.
  • Strong family history of CAD.
  • Males are more prone and post-menopausal women are also at risk factor.
  • Age above 50 years.

LIFESTYLE

CERTAIN LIFESTYLE CHANGES ARE BENEFICIAL IN PREVENTION OF CAD:

  • Less use of sodium in your diet.
  • Keep healthy diets like fibre rich foods including vegetables and fruits.
  • Increase Physical Activity in your routine.
  • Regular yoga or exercise and mediation reduces the risk of heart disease by maintaining the blood pressure level.
  • Stop Smoking as nicotine constrict the blood vessels making the heart to work harder.
  • Get good and plentiful sleep.
  • Keep your diabetes under control.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Tonsillitis

Tonsils are lymph nodes present on either side of the throat, act as defense system of the body, protecting against bacterial or viral infections by producing antibodies against them. They act as first line of defense of immune system. Sometimes while protecting against infection tonsils get inflamed and swelling occurs, defining the condition as Tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis can be acute, chronic or recurrent in nature. Mainly affecting children and teens but effects adults too.

Tonsillitis in terms of Ayurveda is referred as 'Tundikeri' means enlargement of tonsils.

Causes for Tonsillitis

Causative factor for Tonsillitis can be bacterial or viral infection, but most of the cases are due to viral infection includes adenovirus, enterovirus, influenza virus, para influenza virus, Epstein-Barr virus ,cytomegalovirus, measles virus, and herpes simplex virus etc.

Bacterial infection is due to Streptococcus.

Other reasons for the Tonsillitis are:

  • Repeated throat infections.
  • Continuous dry, hawking, dog-like cough.
  • Constipation can also be one of the reason as there is no elimination of toxins from the body.
  • Use of spices, pungent and astringent and frozen food items in excess.
  • Constant and forcible use of high pitched voice.
  • Nasopharyngeal disease when nasal discharge get dropped into the throat instead of discharging through the nose.
  • When viscid mucus causes blockage of nose and chronic congestion.

  • Having iced water and iced drinks and repeated exposure to cold.

Ayurvedic Reason for Tonsillitis

Intake of cold foods and certain activities (as cold exposure, excess talking), causes Vata and Kapha Dosha imbalance to cause Tonsillitis.

Symptoms of Tonsillitis

  • Enlargement, redness and swelling of the tonsils which leads to difficulty of speech.

  • Redness of the eyes.
  • Development of rashes may occur.
  • Referred pain occurs in the ear (caused by nerves that go to the back of the throat and also go to the ear).

Complications due to Tonsillitis

Various health hazards are often seen, like acute otitis media laryngeal edema, quinsy, rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart diseases.

Preventive Measures

Tonsillitis is contagious by nature. To decrease the risk of getting tonsillitis:

  • Stay away from people who are suffering from active infections.
  • Often wash your hands, especially after coming into contact with someone who is suffering from sore throat, or is coughing or sneezing.
  • If you have tonsillitis, try to stay away from others until you are no longer contagious.

How to Reduce Urea Levels in Blood Naturally

The composition of human blood is very diverse. It contains many bio chemicals that come together as a result of the body's metabolic processes and become part of the blood to perform various functions. The blood is made up of plasma and serum which together are its main constituents.

Urea is a toxic biochemical compound produced by the breakdown of nitrogenous chemicals produced by the breakdown of proteins in the body. It is a waste product which has to be eliminated by urine on a regular basis to keep the body healthy. In people with a malfunctioning kidney, urea is not excreted out as effectively due to which it starts accumulating in the body beyond safe levels.

The normal range of urea in blood is 7 to 20 mg/dl. This may be variable depending upon the reference range used and the age of the patient etc. For an older patient the normal values of blood urea are different and mostly higher than for a young adult.

Nevertheless, high levels of urea in blood are a serious concern which should be checked in time to prevent damage to the vital body organs and worsening of kidney function. Given below are a few ways in which blood urea levels can be checked and controlled naturally.

Natural Ways to Reduce Urea Levels In Blood

1. REDUCE PROTEIN INTAKE IN DIET

Proteins are the main food products that are broken down to produce urea in blood. Therefore, for a patient in Uremia (raised urea levels in blood), it is important to severely restrict protein in his diet. Limiting animal fats, cottage cheese, lentils, chick peas etc. is a good option to start with.

The patient can stick to egg whites to meet his protein demands and follow a calculated diet chart which allows him to take the maximum permissible protein that can be safely taken on a daily basis.

2. LIMITING ALCOHOL INTAKE

Alcohol is metabolised in the liver to produce harmful toxins that can damage the kidneys. It also puts pressure on the kidneys by acting as a stimulant. For a kidney with impaired function, alcohol intake may worsen the blood composition and create difficulties for the patient. So it is better that such patients stay away from alcohol as far as possible.

3. WATCH SALT LEVELS

Something as basic as a low sodium diet can have very regulatory effect over high urea levels in the body. Salt is mostly filtered and regulated in the long loops of the Kidney Nephrons. When the kidneys are not functioning properly, it becomes difficult for them to effectively filter out salt from the body. Renal hypertension which may cause or develop as a result of deranged kidney function is also dependent a lot on the salt levels in blood.

4. POTASSIUM MANAGEMENT

This is especially important for people on dialysis although in the initial stages of compromised kidney function, potassium levels just need to be monitored. Potassium is an important mineral for the body which regulates the salt levels in the cells. Its levels are also maintained in blood with the regulatory control of the kidneys.

With optimum potassium levels in the body, load on the kidneys would drastically reduce giving them enough time to cope with high urea levels.

5. INCREASE VITAMIN C INTAKE

Vitamin C is one of the best anti – oxidants for the body. It is wonderful to prevent free radical damage to the kidneys and also helps to control levels of Iron in the body (Kidney patients usually develop Anemia due to the absence of erythropoietin hormone in the body).

With a good intake of vitamin C, kidneys are stimulated to produce more urine which helps in the elimination of urea and creatinine effectively.

6. BITTER GOURD JUICE

Bitter gourd is a boon for people with kidney problems especially associated with Diabetes. Bitter gourd is a great regulator of blood sugar and naturally detoxifies the body. It also helps cleanse the blood by flushing out toxic chemicals from the body.

Ayurvedic point of view on raised urea levels in the body

As per Ayurveda, toxins are produced in the body which are recognised as "Ama". If not eliminated by the body Ama accumulates in the body creating problems in different body organs. Urea can also be considered as a type of Ama which when not removed from the body may start producing problems in the body.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Renal Failure

Kidneys, organ of our body which maintain balance of body fluids. It eliminates organic ions from the body, maintains plasma concentration, and electrolyte balance of the body.

Kidney functions depends on glomerular filtration rate, rate at which there is filtration in the glomeruli of the kidney.

Renal failure occurs due decrease in glomerular filtration rate. Renal failure is characterized by decrease in or absence of urine production or accumulation of waste products (creatinine or urea) in the blood. Depending on the cause, hematuria (loss of blood in the urine) and proteinuria (loss of protein in the urine) may be noted.

RENAL FAILURE - AN AYURVEDIC VIEW

As Ayurveda says, in our body there are two waste materials 'ama' and 'kitta'. Substance 'ama' is formed as a result of undigested/fermented food which is normally formed in an individual. Substance 'Kitta' can be considered as a waste which is removed from the body like sweat, faeces and urine.

Vata, Pitta & Kapha three doshas in our body according to Ayurveda, if working in a synchronized manner it signifies a healthy body system. Vitiated doshas lead to diseased condition of the kidney. If Kaphadosha gets vitiated it causes renal failure as kidney functions are impaired.

Kidneys are made up two dhatus "Rakta" and "Meda". Treatment of these two dhatus is also an effective way to treat the kidneys.

Impairment of ApanaVayu, a type of vayu, causes impaired excretion of urine or urine retention.

Ayurveda explains the cause of this disease that there are minute body channels called srotaswhich gets blocked. Mutravahasrotas, are body channels that carry urine and are responsible for the flow of liquid into and out of the kidneys. In case of obstruction in incoming srotas, the kidneys are denied fluids and results in shrinkage. But in case, if there is obstruction in outgoing channels swelling occurs.

TYPES OF RENAL FAILURE

Acute Renal Failure: is rapid decline in renal function due to obstruction in renal tubes resulting in accumulation of nitrogenous compounds such as urea and creatinine.

It is Characterized by:

  • Anuria - No urine output or less than 100ml/24 hours
  • Oliguria - n < 500ml urine output/24 hours or < 20mls/hour

It can result from a various causes, generally classified as prerenal, intrinsic, and post renal.

Chronic Renal Failure: Chronic Renal Failure is the slow progressive loss of kidney function over a period of months or year. Filtration rate is less than 60ml/min for 3 months.

CAUSES FOR RENAL FAILURE

  • Blockage in arteries.
  • Anatomical or physiological abnormalities.
  • Birth defects of the kidneys (such as polycystic kidney disease).
  • Due to certain drugs or toxic chemicals.
  • Autoimmune Disease as systemic lupus erythematous and scleroderma.
  • Injury or trauma or infections can cause renal failure.
  • Glomerulonephritis.
  • Reflux nephropathy (in which the kidneys are damaged by the backward flow of urine into the kidneys).

SYMPTOMS OF RENAL FAILURE

  • General feeling of illness, fatigue and headache.
  • Dry skin and generalized itching (pruritus).
  • Weight loss without trying to lose weight.
  • Loss of Appetite.
  • Drowsiness and mental confusion.
