Writer's Cramp - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Ayurvedic treatment

INTRODUCTION

Writer's cramp are of two types, out of which; one is known as simple writer's cramp ; focal hand dystonia; arm dystonia or finger dystonia is found to have an obstruction in performing a peculiar task , for instance , holding a pen and retarded précised writing is observed. On the other hand, dystonic writer's cramp is not restricted to hands but also hinder various tasks. The atypical position of elbow and wrist, clutching pen firmly or not able to use hands properly in performing simple tasks like handling vessels, daily routine works (like, shaving, applying make-up) are observed. It is most commonly found in the ranges of the age of 30 to 50 on an average of 38. It is predominantly found in men than women.

It is an involuntary muscle movements and effects somatic nervous system. The exact details for the causes are still being worked out.

CAUSES

  • It is presumed to be the consequence of dissipation of voluntary muscular activity.
  • Brain injury with syncope and nearsightedness are also related.
  • Influence of heredity have been reported.
  • The failure in functioning of basal nuclei in cerebral cortex and motor cortex results in the writer’s cramp.
  • Other disorders which may contribute to writer’s cramp are hypoxia, ischemia, malignancy, and heavy metal poisoning.

SYMPTOMS

  1. Severe pain in hands
  2. Stiffness
  3. Discomfort
  4. Trembling, shaky hands
  5. Not being able to clutch, grip, hold things
  6. Limited hand activities e.g., playing any instrument, holding pen, clumsy handwriting.

DIAGNOSIS

There are no test as such, but few parameters which are able to assess the severity of the disorder are as follows:-

  • ADDS (Arm Dystonia Disability Scale) and WCRS (Writer's Cramp Rating Scale) to check writing ability.
  • MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) to check systemic abrasion.
  • EMG (Electromyography) to check contractions.
