Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown cause that leads to inflammation in many organs of the body. It is an auto-immune disease. Normally, your immune system defends your body against foreign or harmful substances. For example, it makes immunity cells to protect organs that are in danger.
These cells release chemicals that recruit other cells to isolate and destroy the harmful substance. Inflammation occurs during this process. Once the harmful substance is destroyed, the cells and the inflammation goes away.
In people who have sarcoidosis, the inflammation doesn't go away. Instead, some of the immune system cells cluster to form lumps called granulomas (gran-yu-LO-mas) in various organs in your body.
According to modern medical science- The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown at this time. Therefore, there is no specific treatment to cure the condition, but according to Ayurveda the disease is caused by generation of endotoxins i.e. it is an auto-immune disease which can be treated well with natural medicines.
Steroids - Steroids are the drugs which are used in allopathic system of medicine to control inflammation. They are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, but they also affect the immune-system and has many side effects.
Corticosteroids, usually prednisone (wysolone), is used in reducing inflammation are the first drugs used in the treatment of sarcoidosis. In patients with mild symptoms, such as skin lesions, eye inflammation, or cough, topical steroid therapy with creams, eye-drops or inhalers may be sometimes sufficient to control the disease but still there are many side effects involved. When necessary, oral steroids are generally prescribed for six to twelve months. In most cases, a relatively high dose is prescribed at first, followed by a slow taper to the lowest effective does.
OTHER ALLOPATHIC DRUGS FOR SARCOIDOSIS
Alternative medications are used in patients who cannot tolerate steroids, do not respond to steroids or wish to lower the dose of steroids. These include:
- Methotrexate - This medication reduces inflammation and suppresses the immune system.
- Cyclophosphamide and Azathiprine - These medications are most commonly used in conjunction with steroids in patients whose condition is worsening despite treatment.
- Antimalarial Medications (Hydroxychloroquine) - These medications are used to treat sarcoidosis of the skin and lungs.
- Colchicine - This medication is most communly used to treat gout and is sometimes prescribed to treat sarcoidosis-related arthritis.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR SARCOIDOSIS
Ayurveda - the ancient healthcare system medicine still very much practiced in India and many parts of the world. It is a WHO recognized and adopted by Govt. of India as a major healthcare system to help masses and provide the benefits of herbs and herbal remedies to public.
There are many herbal remedies for sarcoidosis described in Ayurveda. The name of the disease may be "ama-Vata (similar to Rheumatism in aetiopathology and pathogenesis) or Sannipaitik aamaj granthi rog"
The treatment described in Ayurveda is as per the doshic theory i.e. maintaining the balance of Vata-Pitta-Kapha.
There are many patients who responded well to Ayurvedic treatment for Sarcoidosis. I gave the following prescription to most of them with some alterations depending upon patient to patient condition and allied diseases other than sarcoidosis.
- Boswellia-Curcumin - 2 capsules thrice daily (excellent for all sarcoidosis patients)
- Kachnaar Guggul - 2 tablets thrice daily
- Kishore Guggul - 2 tablets thrice daily
- Tulsi Capsules - 1 twice daily
- Sachets
- Praval Panchamrit - 5 gm
- Swarn Basant Malti Ras - 2 gm
- Swarn Makshik Bhasma - 10 gm
- Rajat Bhasma - 5 gm
- Shwas Kuthar Ras - 5 gm
- Mukta Pishti - 2 gm
- Abhrak Bhasma - 5 gm
- Kalmegh Navayas Loh - 5 gm
- Giloy Satv - 10 gm
- Yashad Bhasma - 5 gm
- Vriht Vat Chintamani ras - 2 gm
- Swarn Sameer Pannag ras - 2gm
- Pakv Vishamjawarantak Loh - 5 gm
Make 60 equal doses, consume 1 dose twice daily with honey.
These above mentioned 5 medicines are sufficient to control the disease and even reverse it. It reduces the inflammation in the lymph nodes, get rid of fevers, weakness and fatigue feeling. These are pure herbs without steroids or any chemicals or preservatives.

Yes, you can use fresh ginger instead of powder. The concept in treatment of sarcoidosis in Ayurveda is digestion of Ama i.e. endotoxins. The theory is different than that of current medical practice which believe in theory of auto-immunity. According to Ayurveda all auto-immune disorders are caused by endotoxins generated in our own system.

I would recommend you to use all the above written Ayurvedic remedies for sarcoidosis which really have worked well for many patients. The regimen you have suggested to take ginger juice with apple juice is ok. Curcumin should be taken as it is with water and not with olive oil.

I had inflammation of the iris in sept 2009 causing blurry vision. The optomologist diagnosied it as a condition caused by sarcoid. My blood report was fine with no issues, major organ fuctions fine, and all my renal scans were fine too. I was presecibed PRED FORTE drops (4x daily for 4 weeks) and then MaxiDex (1 drop 2 times a day for 6 weeks). This has killed the inflammation in the eye and has made my vision clearer but I stll see blurry image time to time and a bit heavyness on the right side of my head. I also did eye test recently by opticians and there is no glucoma issue but I do have prescription (numbers). Recently (5 days ago) I completed ayurveda panchkarma treatment (15h/08 to 30/08) which has made me feel better. I am now on 41 days medication supplements - I am hoping that my immune system will fight it all by itself as the ayurvedic medicines start to absorb and immune system gets to build stronger. Please could you let me know if there are other ayurvedic treatments that I should follow for completely erratidicating this condition? As I sometimes feel out of balance while standing up or sudden movement of head but generally fine. My ayurvedic practitioner is confident that I should start seeing the difference after 41 days - Any thoughts?

Curcumin Capsules -2 twice daily,
Aloe vera juice - 30 ml twice daily, empty stomach
Kachnaar guggul tablets -2 tablets thrice daily
These herbal remedies work in a combination and give good results in conditions like sarcoidosis.
You should be in touch with your local Ayurvedic Practitioner as well for follow up.
he is right in saying that you will soon notice the difference after a few days.
I would recommend you to go for panchkarma every 6 months for about 15 days.

ReplyDeleteI am a 45 year female and was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in March 2009. I took steroidal treatment at AIIMS from Dr. Randeep Gulleria right away. The treatment started with heavy doses. The dosage was gradually reduced after 9 months of treatment and the treatment stopped after 15 months when no nodes were found in my lungs (through a CT scan). Now, HCQS is still continuing.
I have been a patient of hypothyroid for the past 16 years and of diabetes for the past 5 years and take allopathic medicines for the same. I also had pain in the neck and shoulder for the past 7 years (perhaps due to spondilitis).
Current Condition: I still don't feel healthy at all. I have swelling on my face and hands. My body pains all the time particularly in the legs and all the joints. I have shortness of breath even with little exertion. My eyesight has deteriorated. I had a terrible hair loss for which i had to take treatment. My immunity has perhaps reduced in the past as I've been ill 4-5 times in the past year. I feel very low and sometimes depressed.
Questions:
1. Why do you think my current condition is like it is? Is it just the side-effects of steroids?
2. What would you suggest to heal my current condition?
3. It has been seen that sarcoidosis may be followed by other diseases like nuerosarcoidosis or pulmonory fibrosis. I have some symptoms, not all and therefore would like to know if i should do something to prevent them.
4. I am planning to stay at a naturopathy centre for at least 15 days shortly. How much do you approve of it?

ReplyDeleteI would strongly approve your stay for 15 days at a naturopathy center.I would also approve your visit to an Ayurvedic treatment center in Palampur (Himachal Pardesh) which is really a nice one and good for detoxification and overall rejuvenation. You can search on google for this kayakalp center - palampur. I think it is a govt. run or may be private but I stayed there and I really liked that.

yes, you can take aloe vera juice and Giloye together for Sarcoidosis, but more than this I would recommend you Turmeric ( curcumin ) capsules or use of Haridra.

Hello Dr. My sis who ia 41 yrs old is suffering from sarcoidosis like symptoms since last 2 yrs but doctors are still not very sure about it and confuded whether it is tuberculosis or sarcoid PPd and other tubercular test are negative. she is not taking any medicine except paracetamol for fever she is having since 2 yrs she is also taking haldi powdwer in milk for about 1month. what else you would suggest her to take.

ReplyDeleteAs you know, we should not indulge ourselves in naming of the disease rather than noticing the imbalance in the doshas. For easing or for physician's comfort some names have been given to some diseases in Ayurveda and also for doing "Lakshanik or Vyadi pratyanik Chikitsa" but still we can not achieve success if we do not follow the principle of "Dosha pratyanik chikitsa". So for the ease of understanding, I wrote the Disease "MAY BE" comapred with AmA vata..because Ama formation is there in both the diseases i..e Rheumatoid as well as Sarcoidosis. there are auto-immune antibodies in both the diseases. The disease may also be named - Sannipaitik aamaj granthi rog" which may not be there in the texts but we have to use our applied sense in order to name the disease. The treatment should be focussed on Doshic imbalances. i.e. maintaining the balance of Vata-Pitta-Kapha. I will be glad to explain further if you are interested to know. ReplyDeleteMy mother is suffering from sarcoidosis since last 7-8 yrs but unfortunately she was given treatment for T.B...Since last 2 yrs she has been taking steroid (wysolone 20).Recently she was asked to get lungs C.T. scan done.Doctor says there has been no change in C.T scan that was taken 7 yrs back and the one that is taken now. So doctor reduced the dose from 20mg to 5mg.My mother was diagnosed with diabities also at the same time i.e.7 yrs back. Now she is taking insulin. she is suffering from high diabities because of steroid she has been taking.
Now sarcoidosis problem has affeced her eyes and skin after affecting her lungs.Prolonged suffering has made her very disappointed and depresses.
Kindly suggest what ayurvedic medicines are bes for her for treating her sarcoidosis and diabities. Also, can she take allopathy and ayurvedic treatment at the same time?
The alternative treatment for Sarcoidosis should be followed now for your mom. I would recommend the above recommended ayurvedic remedies for her. Other than this, Since she is diabetic, I want to give her liver cleanse to remove toxins. Liver cleanse helps in most of the diseases. So I would like to add - Yakrit Plihantak Churna in this case.

ReplyDeleteHello, I had been diagnosed and subsequently treated for pulmonary sarcoidosis about 3 yrs back. Since past 8 months I have been experiencing pain and stiffness in the finger and ankle joints, like if I carry a bag for a little while, the fingers would remain in that bent position even after the bag is removed. Is this another manifestation of the disease?

ReplyDeleteDr V I was diagnosed about 7 yrs ago, I have slight lung scarring and my xhest xrays have remin unchanged each year. My problem is the nose and scalp. I have small patches on my nose that gets inflammed ofter, my scalp is scaley and very irritated. I have been on so many med but othing seems to help otehr than predisone, I tried it for a month and gain a lot of weight. So I refuse to take it now. I would like to try an alternate method, please give me suggestions on what to take. Again my skin and scalp is theonly thing that seems to not respond. I currently tale 75mg of Imurran and have been on this for 2months and taka for my blood pressure!!

Curcumin used along with Garlic and Ginger works as best herbal remedies for sarcoidosis. you can continue taking Ginger and turmeric. Amla is also good. I am wondering if you consider a persons life style and habits in thinking of the cause and in the treatment of Sarcoidosis. I have heard that it is thought by some in Ayurveda that diseases such as this can be considered a Karmic disease. Do you find any truth to this? Do you address life style changes along with the herbs and dietary changes with your patients with this disease?
ReplyDeleteYes. Sarcoidosis herbal remedies work very well but I advise my patients to think positively in life and make necessary changes in lifestyle. Someone rightly said to you that ayurveda believes that all diseases are born because of our Karma. Doing right things in life will keep the feelings of Anger, Guilt, jealousy, hatred away from one's mind. These feelings lead to imbalance of hormones ( adrenaline, cortisol) in our body causing imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha is the cause of all diseases. Diet, lifestyle, karma, (routine) play important role in treatment and prevention of diseases. I would like to say Thank You to Doctor Vikram for his help in treating sarcoidosis of the lungs. My fiancee was having it discovered after X-ray and biopsy and we decided to use Curcumin, Kachnaar Guggul and Aloe Vera together. My fiancee started taking all of that 4 months ago and each month she made X-ray. During 4 months we progressively see that inflammation in the lungs goes away and we are very happy. Such herbal medicines are much better for the body than chemicals.

ReplyDeleteFor sarcoidosis treatment the curcumin capsules are good and not for high creatinine or Uric acid. Curcumin is good for pains and inflammations but not for fire energy imbalance- which seems to be your case.
DeleteCurcumin is also high in fire.. And causes imbalance of fire energy. Curcumin needs to be balanced by using aloe Vera juice, rencure formula, arogyavardhni vati, mutrakruchantak churna. Using these you can continue using curcumin for inflammation due to sarcoidosis.
Then it will be helpful in treatment of sarcoidosis as well as urea creatinine

ReplyDeleteDear Dr. Rajesh - The immuno suppresant drugs are not really the answer to the auto-immune diseases. We need immuno-modulation rather than suppression. The diseases like Multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis, Rheumatoid arthritis and many others need immuno-modulating natural herbs like turmeric ( curcumin), tinospora cordifolia etc. For sarcoidosis, the above mentioned recipe of various ayurvedic herbs is very useful and helps to reduce the size of the nodules and further prevent inflammation. Steroids are also not a good way to take temporary shelter rather Curcumin, Ginger work better than steroids. So I would suggest you to write to My assistant Mr. Ashwani or call him at the top of this blog so that we can discuss your case further and I can recommend you ayurvedic treatment.

Hello Dr. Vikram Chauhan. My name is Anand Prakash and staying in NOIDA. I am a sarcoid patient since 2009. It first started with cough and fever, worse evenings. It is also effecting my eyes also causing uveitis. I used Predmet for the eye problem and is on prednisone for about last three years. Treatment started with 30 mg steroids and now it is varying between 5 to 10 mg. I am also taking HCQA along with calcium supplement. Nowadays I have started feeling a little week and i do not want to increase steroids anymore. Please help me in this case. Thanks

ReplyDeleteI have recently spent a week in the hospital for fevers, and joint pain and swelling, and muscle pain. After a lot of blood work and several ct scans it was discovered that my lymph nodes between the heart and lungs are swollen and I have nodules on my liver. This has caused the drs. to think that I have sarcoidosis. I was told that now they need to do a biopsy of my lymph nodes, which they can do by going through my lung with a needle. This scares me, but I guess may have to be done. I have had fevers now for 4 weeks, which last night was 101.7 after taking both tylenol and motrin an hour and a half earlier. Is there an herbal remedy to help get rid of the fevers? At present I am only taking motrin and tylenol for the symptoms.

I am 29 now and have not used eye drops or steroids for the past 9 years but have been suffering the effects of this disease/medication since, as i have lost most of my vision (seriously blurred vision) in my right eye due to the "scarring" caused by the sarcoid (as told to me by the surgeons) as my left seems to be deteriorating slowly and still get the odd pain in the back of both eyes occasionally.
What would you suggest taking to (maybe) reverse this disease and/or if there is any chance to get rid of the scarring at the back of my right eye.
Any advice/info would be grateful as i have been told there is no cure for sarcoid and intrigued by the ayurvedic treatment.
I also want to ask if your supplements/treatments is possible for abroad shipping as i live in the UK.

Hi DR, my husband was diagnosied with Sarcoid last year. he was feeling bloated, nausea and sick overall. the blood investigations shows he has got high creatinie and low vit D. chest X ray confirm that it is sarcodosis. he was on prednisole for around 10 mths and stop it last year in nov.the blood investegation durning his treatments were normal. he was fine for 2-3 moths and the symptoms came back last month.he is losing appetite, bloated all the time, vomitting as he cant digest, aches in joints, redness and blurry eyes, feeling tired all the time. visit to doctor shows his creatinine is high again, vit D still low. he also has got high cholestrol. dr. dont want ot put him back on prednisole due to its side effects and has prescrobe azathiprine imrun 50mg once daily. he has not started with the medicatin yet. Please advice what we should do and if you need to see his blood reports where shall i send. i am really concerned as his situation is deterorating.also if you can advice on what food/drink should be avoided or what should we increase in the diet. Please advice.

Hello I am Dr, Kumar , My sis who 44 yrs old is suffering from sarcoidosis like symptoms since last 1 yrs but doctors are still not very sure about it whether it is tuberculosis or sarcoidosis in HEART. Myocardium biopsy was done, for sarcoidosis and other tubercular test are negative.

ReplyDeleteDr I have sarcoidosis and recently started taking 500mg x 2 tumeric tablets daily, bromelain, fishoil and glucosameine after 6 days I experienced uterine cramping and breakthrough menstrual bleeding which continues (I have stopped fish oil and reduced tumeric to 250mg once per day). I am hoping this will improve as I noticed a good effect on my joint pain/energy levels. Do you have any guidance on this aspect as I understand tumeric/curcumin is a uterine stimulant? Thanking you.

ReplyDeleteI am a sarcodiosis patient for the last 8 years, my problem is breathlessness and cough sometimes, I had a weight loss in the beginning , but now it is not there. If I climb a flight of steps I feel heaviness in my chest for sometime. A Ct scan and X-Ray was done last year and the Pulmonologist has advised me to take azathoprine 50mg twice daily, which I have been taking for the last 15 months. Kindly advise if it is okay to take the above said medicine along the allopathy medicine.

Her problem is continuous cough, weakness, eye inflamation, distaste, weight loss pain in her kinks and fever. Whenever she is suffering from fever it continues for 15-20 days at least. only a year ago she is 52 kg and now her wait is only 42 kg. even she cant sleep properly. Now she is doing her treatment under the medicine specialist Dr. FM. Siddiqi in Lab Aid Hospital situated in Bangladesh. Though she felt better at the very beginning of the treatment but now a days her condition is severe. She is mentally very upset now.She feels as like there is no hope in her life. Doctor prescribed her the following medicines-
1. salmolin-200
2. Telukast-10
3. Esomep-20
4. Salflu-250
At first the doctor prescribed her some other medicines too but now he has reduced the medicines as well as the doses. But there is no physical upgrade. ReplyDeleteI am 29 years old male. I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis 3/4 months back.
I never had any sort of irritation or inflammation. Only symptoms I had were breathlessness and a drastic loss of stamina. My doctor who is an MD prescribed me prednisolone and some sort of Magnesium capsules. The names of the medicines are Omnacortil-20 (manfacturer is Macleods) and Sompraz D (manufactured by Sun Farma). I've been taking these medicines for past 2 months. The problem of breathlessness disappeared just 2-3 days after I started taking those medicines but since then I've put on a few kilos and have developed pretty heavy swelling (or call it fat) on my face. Is it because of of the steroids? Should I switch over to ayurvedic treatment? Do ayurvedic treatments also have side effects? And most importantly, how to reduce this facial swelling.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter (Age: 10 years) is suffering from rare autoimmune disease (Anti - NMDA Encephalitis). She had headache, low grade fever and lost her speech. After IV Methyl Pred and IV IG treatment, she has recovered almost 95%. There are 30% chances of relapse as ovary tumor could not be found. Please let me know if you have cured any patient with this disease.
